Advised to try 'dairy free' again - any advice for tasty treats for me!!!

I have been advised by paediatrician and dietician to try my Lo on dairy free which given I'm still bf, means I have to also go dairy free. I did this for about 2 weeks when she was younger but found it really difficult and slipped up a few times I'm sure. I need to try it completely this time so I know for sure. Problem is I love, love, love cakes and chocolate (and I dont mean expensive 80% dark chocolate) Anyway, realised milk chocolate if off limits, so any other tasty treats. Dairy free recipes, etc. Also, dinners if possible. God, the things we do!!!!!

oooh.......have seen ritter sport in lidls and aldis.

can't make out the language tho, so avoided, but yay for telling which ones are ok

Nightynight · 07/01/2008 22:14

Actually, in Germany there is loads of milk free chocolate - eg Aldi do plain choc with nuts, and plain choc with orange bits. There is also plain choc with caramel bits in.

MrsBadger · 07/01/2008 22:14

also get creative with non-chocolate sweets - marzipan, nougat, that weird Italian stuff with the nuts in (torrone?) also some indian sweets

There's a nice choc covered marzipan bar available in Waitrose. Was a regular treat for me when I was dairy free.

psychomum5 · 07/01/2008 22:22

well then, waitrose is gonna make a pile of money out of me soon then isn't it

Thanks bigbadwulf, where do you get bettycrocker stuff? Big supermarkets. Went to Tesco today, got some doughnuts, no ingredient list on them so just took your word for it. Unfortunately, came away with wrong pancakes I think, as they say they have whey powder in them, couldnt see any that said they didnt. Am excited about jalfrezi sauce, will try that. Dinners feel a bit dull without cheese, cream, etc. but will get there.

Any ideas for carry outs or is that just being too adventurous? Read sweet and sour sauce okay but think the meat with it generally has soem kind of batter so that would be bad. Chips from chip shop I guesss, but what could you have with them?

Boo, hoo, we dont have waitrose as am in Scotland.

Last point, DD2 was up for ages last night, ungrateful wretch, doesnt she know the sacrifices I'm making????

If you need to know ingredients on instore bakery stuff, then ask at the bakery. They have a folder which lists all ingredients/allergens in their products (except my local store, which seems to have permanently lost theirs ).

If your chippy does pukka pies (pretty sure that's the make, but double check with them to be certain), their steak and kidney one is dairy free (don't know about others). Also, somewhat surprisingly IMO, the batter on fish is often dairy free. You will have no way of knowing unless you ask, and the staff probably won't know themselves, but I have found them quite obliging in finding the packaging for me to check.

FlorenceFarkingNightingale · 08/01/2008 20:42

(I'm CantSleepWontSleep (or Sleigh over Christmas) btw Pevie, in case you didn't realise that we'd spoken about this sort of stuff before).

pevie · 08/01/2008 20:46

Oh didnt realise people changed their nicknames. Very confusing!!! Could be repeating myself all over the place!!! Pukka pies, what are they? Are they called pukka pies in chippy? If batter on fish is dairy free, then could other batter also be dairy free???? Am a woman obsessed with finding unhealthy alternatives to dairy.

OP posts:
FlorenceFarkingNightingale · 08/01/2008 20:53

at not knowing pukka.

You'll find lots of name changers over Christmas, but most will be similar to their usual name. This is just a temp change for me whilst dh and dd have chickenpox.

Other batter could be dairy free I guess, but I can't recall any other products with it which I found to be okay (some with breadcrumbs might be safe though).

helloooooo all

before adding meal ideas, I got to add that please do not think that BHS batter is dairy free! I went there last week to feed me and the kiddies (were out with my aunt....), and she insisted on fish n chips, which I knew they served in BHS. anyhoo.....got there, she opted for shepherds pie, and the only apparent thing for me was fish n chips ( I will add....I wanted to go for a baked potatoe somewhere esle, she did not).......the batter was not dairy free, as I found to my cost when my face turned raspbarry like

AnnakeyRules · 08/01/2008 21:49

dark chocolate coated brazil nuts are my current fave...

Watch out for naan bread as some have milk/joghurt in them (usually 'brand' ones, supermarkets own especially the cheaper ones are usually ok)

Swedish glace 'ice cream' is yum, with dark choc sauce on you'd never know it's non-dairy. Sorbets are great, too.

Potato cakes are a good alternative to bread because they are still yummy without butter- just check ingredients, again supermarket own brands are usually OK.

Watch out for Tesco raspberry sorbet though Annakey - it contains milk.

trixymalixy · 08/01/2008 23:19

Whereabouts in scotland are you Pevie? I'm in Glasgow.

I'm in the same posision as you but my LO is allergic to eggs as well as dairy, which is a total nightmare when it comes to cakes etc.

You can get lots of different types of soya desserts, youghurts, custard etc.

I used to make Delia's melting chocolate puddings (soooo yummy!) using Pure instead of butter before I was avoiding eggs too.

Hobnobs, empire biscuits and certain danish pastries are dairy free.

Bendicks bittermints are nicer than after eights and dairy free!

i have just bought dairy free cheese in Grassroots in Glasgw so will report back if you want.

yama · 09/01/2008 18:53

Apologies if this has been suggested already but I take rice milk on my cereal - tis sweet and yummy.

My dp is the lactose intolerant one but I have cut down on my dairy intake and have to admit that the spots I started getting in my late 20's have (just about) become non-existent.

yama · 09/01/2008 18:55

Oh and yes please Trixymalixy - could you report back on the dairy free cheese?

pevie · 09/01/2008 20:47

Thanks all, this is great as its very difficult to check all labels with DD1 and 2 in tow............ Trixymalixy am in Glasgow also so have access to all health food shops and supermarkets. What empire biscuits and danish pastries are dairy free and where can I get them?? Not heard any mention of any dairy free products in Asda or Morrisons which are nearest to me. any ideas? Can you access this on websites or something? Did go to Tesco so have some of their goodies? Its just trying to eke out a variety over time I'm wondering about. Poor you psychomum5 if you have to endure this forever!!! Anyone any experiences of giving their LO the dairy free prescription formula. Havent tried yet. She was only just starting to take expressed milk from bottle and dont want to put her off, but would like her to take more bottles when go back to work.

when i went dairy free the only decent choc cake I found was village bakery choc brownies, they are absolutly delicious.

psychomum5 · 09/01/2008 21:02

if your little one is going to be taking from a bottle in the near future then it would be worth going to your dos and asking for the one he recommends and will prescribe.....you (well, baby) is entitled to prescription formula until either back on normal again, or till you can wean them over to soya milk like alpro milk or similar.

my DC's (3 are also milk allergic or intolerant) had cow n gate infasoy (altho that is now not recommended under 1yr old), or pregomin.which is a 'pre-digested' formula (in other words, supposedly non allergic). not sure, but I always called it plastic milk.......each of them had their milks on prescription until they turned 5!

in whatever case, try to get one that is either easily obtained or also on sale without prescription.

when my DS2 had to go over to bottlefeeding (he really had a bad time with me breastfeeding, but then I was very ill too so milk quality was just not there IYGWIM), we had fun n games, as I just was not a bottle feeder. He was my fifth and I had never ever had to make up bottles for the day before..(all the others went over when just on 2feeds a day).
anyhoo.....off I went for a day out, to a friend who lived an hour from home, only to get there and realise that I had no bottles.
luckily for him, he was still on the cross over (ie, breastfed at night, bottle during day) and so I could keep him going until we went home, but if I hadn't, he would have been one unhappy baby as (his* milk was prescription only, but also 'order in' only!

good luck with all this....it really does become second nature after a while.....boring and stroppy making true, but second nature all the same
