My top toys for travel are:
A small set of stacking cups or nesting eggs (great for playing games with hiding Cheerios and raisins!)
Teething rings
A balloon which you can blow up when waiting at the airport. Endless amounts of fun for a 1yo!
When my DC was that age, he loved playing a game where we'd stick post-its all over the back of the seat in front of us and he would peel them all off! He also loved sticking post-its on himself and me! Amused him for ages.
Pipe cleaners can be taken in hand luggage and are fantastic fun.
Put some snacks in little envelopes for him to tear open.
A high chair toy with suction
Two or three finger puppets
Fisher price ‘My First Fidget Cube’
A few stickle bricks

We had a set of magnetic wooden blocks so our DD could build without loosing them. They’ve been well loved since.

We’ve only done four hour flights at that age but I don’t recall it being particularly bad! Lots of snacks and hope for a decent couple of naps/sleep in that time.

just got back long haul with our almost 2 year old. took sticker books, books to read to her, a toy car
, the teddies she takes to bed, crayons and a colouring book and some other things that fitted in her trunkee. She only used the tablet and tbh it was much easier than having to get thing s out of the case. she seemed more interested in watching people around her, eating and asking me to read the 'menu book' to her.

so I'd say snacks and a tablet loaded with cbeebies downloads.

If you're getting new toys- wrap them up like presents, just opening the wrapping is an activity in itself Grin
