Hi all, I please need help as my GP is absolute shit. My 9 week old has acid reflux so they prescribed gaviscon infant. But they didn't explain how to give it.
My baby eats breastmilk from a bottle. she typically has about 75ml per feed. the leaflet says to mix 1 sachet in 115ml of milk, how can i do that?
Anyone has experience with this?

It’s a fucking nightmare to give. It was nearly 6 years ago but I used to have to mix it with cooled boiled water an syringe it into their mouth during feeding.

What other symptoms does your little one have? Is there poo OK? Do you think it’s just normal developmental or could it be an allergy? I would ask for your GP to contact paeds and ask them to prescribe something else.

Thanks , fucking nightmare is about right! I think it's just developmental but time will tell. Her poo is OK (runny etc) but she does strain to poo a LOT at times (for hours). GP said that's normal (?!)

I have a private pediatrician booked for next week, maybe they can help cause the GP and HV are absolute and utter shite and all they do is pass the buck from one to another.

For now, I have her gaviscon mixed with 15ml of water from a bottle. Tried the syringe and she just spit it all out. Even from the bottle she spit half of it out. I wonder if I can mix it in the breast milk to trick her into eating it? Won't it thicken the milk too much and make it hard to eat?

It may thicken the milk but that's easily solved by going up a size in teat.

My DD had infant gaviscon from 4weeks old. She was breastfed with formula top ups. Hers was developmental related as it completely went away at 7month. For 75ml we just tipped about 2/3rds of the sachet into the bottle. You'll know if you give too much as it causes constipation. You can then adjust slightly until you get the right balance.

Update: i gave her some yesterday, about 2.5 sachets (over 8h or so). She's now horrendously constipated! She went from 3-4 big runny poos during the day to 0 and crying in pain.

I went back to the cretin that is my GP who claimed that gaviscon does not cause constipation! And told me there's nothing he can do to help regrading the new problem, just give her water and wait. And call 111 if she's still not gone by tomorrow.

I've obviously stopped the gaviscon now. But any idea how to help her past the constipation?

Absolute bull that gaviscon doesn't cause constipation!

We preserved with it because I didn't want the alternative till we really had to. But luckily DS didn't get constipated. You could try lowering the quantity?
Do you know all the other tips and tricks for reflux babies op?

HappilyHadesBound · 01/04/2022 18:24

It definitely causes constipation!!! It's a balance x

Gaviscon DOES cause constipation! A paediatrician told us it didnt as well when DD hadnt pooed for 3 days.
We are down to 1/3 of rhe recommended dose and im trying to stop it as she is on omeprazole too.
