Have I met my first child pervert?

Yesterday, I left and locked DS in the car to pay for petrol, when I came back he was laughing and smiling to someone so I looked around and there a man staring at DS, 21 months, licking his lips and really showing his tongue out doing so. Yesterday I found this weird now I?m disgusted and worrying that I?ve met my first child pervert.

We live in a friendly place and lots of people smile back at DS when he waves or smile at them but this feels different. And he never looked at me, which people usually do to show they?re just being friendly.

I feel sick thinking about it.

Maybe he was making funny faces at your child to amuse him.

FlameNFurter · 07/01/2008 11:36

DS finds that hysterical... I would probably do it to another child too because I know mine likes it.

No harm has been done

Misdee · 07/01/2008 11:37

so someone licking their lips/tobgue out means they are a pervert?

he was probably just pulling faces at your ds to make him laugh.

Furball · 07/01/2008 11:39

I would say you can't torture yourself thinking that when you don't know for sure and you probably will never see the chap again.

Think positively about it, your ds was entertained by a kind stranger.

calzone · 07/01/2008 11:39

Of course not!

I stick my tongue out at lots of kids and it makes them laugh!

It isnt as though he had access to ds though is it and ds was laughing and was kept quiet while you paid for petrol.

Poor man.

OFFS - No you're unlikely to have just met your first child pervert. You've probably met at least 20 or so before but you didn't know it.

It sounds highly unlikely that this bloke had any kind of designs on your child because it certainly doesn't sound like any peadophile I've known before. Just because people behave differently doesn't mean that they are a "Durty Peedo".

He may have had sore lips and been licking them, he may have a nervous tic and that manifests itself as lip licking, he may have some anxiety disorder which makes him feel uncomfortable and so he was unconsciously licking his lips.

He was not smiling and usually people glance towards the parents when pulling faces to a child.

However, I might be reading too much into this.

Oh don't be so silly. He was playing with your son, probably trying to make him laugh.

Actually, I'm rather stressed right now, hence my reaction.

is anyone else struck by the irony of this?

Op feels happy enough to leave her child unattended in a car while she goes in to pay for petrol, something which I know many would not for fear of dangers, and when she comes out to find someone making her child smile she thinks they're a pervert? .

Maybe he didn't smile at you because he saw your accusatory expression and thought you might accuse him of being a pervert?

mrspnut beat me to it -just going to say exactly the same thing.

I personally have met two 'perverts'. One was a groundsman and gardener, married with three kids. The other is a scientist, married with two kids and a guy who you would like and would happily have a drink with.Remains one ofthe most amusing people you could spend time with. Everyone loves him.

There are not 'weirdos' in appearance. And sadly i know that people will one day make assumptions about my gorgeous harmless son because he has special needs and has odd behaviours. When he is 30 life is going to be terribly paranoid for me I fear

VictorianSqualor · 07/01/2008 11:47

I always pull faces at children, and never look at the parents tbh.
Do you think you'd have felt the same if this was a woman?

Wisteria · 07/01/2008 11:52

Are you really serious or is this a wind up?

Your child was safe and out of harm's way, so it is completely irrelevant; the poor bloke was probably loving making your ds laugh - hope you never meet me as you will probably think I'm a nutter too! I get tremendous pleasure out of making dcs laugh, especially little ones as I'm so broody!

If you are that skittish I suggest you tie your child to you at all times and certainly not leave him alone in a car!!

wheredowegofromhere · 07/01/2008 11:52

Do you lick your lips when you pull faces to a child?

I'm finding most comments unnecessary harsh here. I was looking for reassurance if anything.

I don't understand why licking his lips was such a big deal, does anyone really lick their lips provocatively or is it just on Naked Gun?

Yes, yes i do. I often lick my lips when playing with a child, especially if it makes them laugh, which it was.

You are becoming unnecessarily aeriated about this. Nothing happened!

Wisteria · 07/01/2008 11:56

I would have thought you are getting reassurance to be honest!

I generally repeat whatever I did that made the child laugh in the first instance..

OK - maybe he freaked you out a bit, but he probably was harmless and may even have had some sort of problem with his lips, your son was safe as you'd locked him in. The man could have had special needs and have been totally innocent.

There are rapists, murderers and perverts walking amongst us all through our lives - I have met a few paedophiles and can say that they never did anything suspicious, as the other poster said - they were fine family men.
