I’m not sure where to post this. I’m just seeking some advice or guidance on this.

My 6 year old son has made a few comments about wanting to be a girl. I understand children may express this and it being ‘just a phase.’ However when he was a bit younger he mentioned wanting his private parts cut off.

I said ‘well when you’re older if you feel the same way we can ask a doctor.’ I really didn’t know how else to respond.

But today he mentioned again, after mentioning it yesterday, that he wants to be a girl and he wants to go to the doctor. He then quickly brushed it off and stopped talking about it but also told me not to tell anyone. I didn’t want to push.

He has a younger sister so I don’t know whether that has any effect.

Any advice or guidance on this would be much appreciated. X

I guess all you can do is give lots of love and reassurance and that his body is a normal boy body. Has he ever seen another male body? Has he seen his sister naked and thinks that that is how he should look?

Have you asked him why he wants to be a girl? My DS said something similar when he was about 9. He didn't actually want to be a girl at all, he just wanted to be able to like stereotypical 'girl' things (dancing and sewing)without being bullied.

He's now a happy, unicorn loving, gay 17 year old. At least he's says he doesn't want to be a girl.

Ask him why.
“It sounds like being a girl really matters to you! What do you imagine Life would be like if you were a girl”
Being a boy or a girl is high currency in the primary school playground. There’s a lot of “you can’t play, you’re a boy” etc.
