Hi all

Looking for some advise my little boy is 16 months not sure if I am over thinking but I feel like he is showing some signs, I am a first time mum so not to sure if it is all normal toddler behaviour
Let’s start with the things I think are signs In him

He currently says no words, he seems to go through phases of mama dada baba but then won’t say then for a while he used to raw for the lion then stopped that and then moo for cow but at the min nothing just babbles through out tue day
It is 50/50 weather he will respond to his name
He has just started last few days flapping one hand when excited or frustrated
He doesn’t point really he just brings things to me then when asked is this what you want will point inside the box
Will tip toe walk now and then
He puts EVERYTHING in his mouth
Doesn’t point To show me things
Doesn’t follow command like go get your shoes

Things he is really good at
Physically he is amazing he wakes , climbs , upstairs down stairs if I hold his hand
Can use a spoon in cereal
Can build towers with Lego
Can do puzzles with the animal shaped to the right ones with out being shown
Understands if I say do you want to go upstairs for a bath (will run to stair gate )
He high fives , waves bye bye (occasionally)
Can do arms up
will clap if you clap
if you jump up and down he will try and copy
Will get excited if you sing a song and clap
Gives good eye contact
Smiles in response to your smile
He sleeps 12 hours of a night and 2-3 hrs of a day
Is a really good eater
Plays with all his toys
Loves bringing me books to read and can turn the pages
If he wants anything opening he bring it over to me
He cry’s when I leave the room

So just looking for some advise please
Thank you in advance

16 months?! Sounds like he is doing great. I really wouldn't worry. Babies do not usually have words/speak at 16 months. And everything else sounds perfectly normal

Have you looked at the m chat test?
Does he point? Can he follow a point?
The loss of words is the one to watch.

Contact your HV if you’re worried, but it’s a bit early to say I think.

He doesn’t point but he will follow a point if I point To the sky etc…
I had a little look at the M chart majority of them were a pass put a few of the communication ones he wasn’t doing

It seems like most of his skills are good except verbal communication.

Has he had a hearing test? Definitely get one - issues like glue ear are really common in little ones.

Otherwise, if you are worried your HV is a good starting point for advice or referrals on.

Sounds good to me.

With babies there's an old saying 'they either talk before they walk or walk before they talk'. Basically they tend to only learn one of these at a time. Sounds like your little one is a walk before they talk sort.

They all catch up and get there in the end.

FWIW my two were the other way round. Neither walked until 17 months.
