White Noise with a Toddler

Hello all,

I wanted to ask those who use white noise to help their toddler to sleep:

  • did you use white noise from newborn stage until now?
  • do you keep the white noise on throughout the night until they wake up in the morning?

We've used white noise for both DC from newborn to now (one is 7 & other is 3) - they like it, it helps them sleep & drown out any noise from downstairs/next door/outside. They can choose which sound to have & if they wanted to stop we'd be fine with that too, but it's certainly been good for us all so far.

Yes and yes. My teenager uses it too now

We’ve used it since both mine were babies. I also sleep with white noise & have done for years. I’m a light sleeper & it really helps! Same for DD1.

DDs have it since babies but can sleep perfectly well without it. Some nights my eldest asks to not have it on & she sleeps fine. Most nights she wants it on though, it drowns out noises such as a cooker fan & clattering of plates as we sort the kitchen etc, which sometimes disturb her & she gets annoyed!

Yes, it’s on all night. We use the kids iPads for it.

Thank you all for your replies!

Is there a certain volume the white noise should be on or do you choose the volume setting yourself?

Go with what works for you & them. We have it at about half volume, as too loud & it'll set the baby monitor off. Too low & it's not worth it. Experiment & see what you & they are happy with.

  1. From about 4 months
  1. Yes, on all night and turning it off is his cue to wake up.

I've used it with my little one since he was about 3 months, really helped with his sleep. I use the Google mini for it, it plays for 12 hours so usually a full sleep. I set the volume at 40% but I read somewhere it shouldn't be louder than a shower (no louder than 50 decibels)
