How to build up independence

How can I start giving my son independence? He is almost 10 but we live on a main road in London so he’s never played out alone or gone anywhere alone, as he’s getting older and will be starting secondary school soon I would like to work out how I can get him some independence, I don’t want him having to travel to secondary school alone having never even been out alone so trying to build it up slowly. I know most kids get that from playing out from a younger age but we don’t live in that type of area. Any suggestions?

Is there a corner shop nearby you could send him to to buy some milk or something?

I wasn’t really allowed to play out whilst primary school age. When I was in Y6 my mum started letting me meet a friend in town for an hour or two and do some shopping or an activity and then I’d meet her after and she’d drive back home.
