Question about baby poo-sorry!

Hi,
So my 3 week old has been a bad pooer since day one. She’s had a dirty nappy once every 5-6 days (after the meconium). When she does go it’s a normal consistency/colour.
Anyway so last week she was really struggling with it, she was straining and pushing for days. She wouldn’t settle for more than five minutes.
We took her to the gp but as baby was quite settled during the appointment I don’t think she really understood what it’s been like.
She prescribed lactulose, but told us that it was basically for our benefit as baby is fine it’s just our peace of mind.
After reading the leaflet we decided against giving it to her and eventually she had a poo 36 hours later.
That was Saturday, and we’re back to square one again now. She did not sleep at all yesterday or last night because of the struggling.
I just don’t know what to do.
I changed my diet abit (added fruit juice, dried apricots etc) to try and get things moving for her but I don’t think it’s a case of the poo being too hard, and I’ve stuck to this new diet all week so it’s obviously not making much difference.
I was hoping once she’d gone a few times she’d get the hang of it but apparently not!
Any experience, advice or just next steps would be very much appreciated

Is baby massage not supposed to help?

Duracellbunnywannabe · 17/03/2022 10:20

Try bicycling her legs, warm baths. It should like infant dyschezia which is a normal development stage where they both try to poo and stop themselves at the same time, it continues until they eventually figure out how to coordinate their muscles to poo.

If the poo is soft when it arrives then she's not constipated. Probably infant dyschezia as said above. It's not pain it's just effort they are screaming about.

Is she breastfed or formula fed?

Thanks for the replies
I’ve not tried massage yet, will give that a go now. I bicycle her legs almost every time I wind her.
Is it normal for her to be trying to go for several days though? I’ve read abit and it seems that a lot of babies will struggle for a few hours then manage to go.
She is breastfed, I should’ve mentioned that first!

Yes, that's normal. Breastfed babies can go about 6-7 days between poos. (I wish someone had told DS2 and 3!)
