Screaming whilst being wiped

So my 20mo ds has always HATED being wiped after food or mud or any other reason he needs to be!

Is it normal for them still to react like it's the worst thing in the world even though it's happened 3 times a day for the last 14 months?

If so any suggestions on how to make it less horrendous? He screams like I'm hurting him! Whether it's a baby wipe, wet flannel, if I sing, dance stupidly! Nothing helps!

I have this same problem, do you try a warm wet flannel at all? x

Mine always screamed.
Can he start to try and do it himself? We had a washing up bowl, "special" sponge, warm water, and a "special" mirror.

Then at least you are just doing a quick finishing off wipe over. And actually mine got quite adept pretty quickly, so I didn't always need to wipe them myself.

I'd let him do it himself, have a little mirror somewhere where he can see it and give him a warm, damp flannel. If you think about it from the child's point of view, it's something they have no control over and it's a hand almost as big as their face heading towards them - as an adult, I'm not sure I'd be too happy about that happening to me several times a day.

DS1 hated it much more than my other two care, maybe he's just a bit oversensitive? DS1 still bothered by clothes etc feeling "wrong".

Defo warm and as soft a cloth as you can and just do it as quick as possible and sympathise.

Thank you everyone for the replies! I hadn't really thought about how a hand the size of their face coming towards them could be quite intimidating! I'll definitely try and let him do it himself!

My DD always hated being wiped too but now at 22 months she ASKS me to be wiped 😂 she apparently decided she doesn’t like being dirty anymore! I did start using a warm flannel instead of wipes though which stopped some of the screaming.

Ours is similar but she really likes it if we sit her on the edge of the sink and she can run her hands under the tap herself. Then she's calmer for having her face wiped.

My 17mo DD is the same, I give her a bowl to wash her hands in but am now going to see if she'll do her face too. Going shopping tomorrow for a 'special' sponge Grin
