new mum needs practical help with slings

I am a new mom (DS is 5 weeks) and would like to use slings. I have a ring sling and a wrap (homemade) and an infant carrier. Have tried the sling and wrap repeatedly, but DS does not like to be put in (understandably, since I am very clumsy putting him in) and is in awkwardly crouched positions once he falls asleep.
Also, am far from having my hands free or nursing, since I need my hand to support his weight. Have spend hours and days looking at internet sites and movies, but I think I might need one-to-one help. How did you get started? Is it just a matter of trying and trying again? Are there sling-support groups? Any experiences slingers who live close to Reading, Berkshire and would be willing to help out? Thanks!!

Hey Wish. I used a Tricotti sling and like you, I was really clumsy at putting DS in at first. It just took practice; I got there in the end. DS would cry and kick up a fuss about being put in, but then fall asleep almost instantly.
You say you need to support your baby's weight - you should only really need to do this when bending down; you should be able to walk around with your hands free (ime).
As I don't know anyone else who babywears, I just muddled through on my own. I'm sure you'll get the hang of it in a few weeks. Good luck!

there is a website called www.slingmeet.co.uk which may have local information you are looking for.

have you heard of www.thebabywearer.com? a dedicated site to babywearing. it is US based but lots of UK mums are on it.

which sling are you using when you say he looks slumped in it after he falls asleep?

have you seen any videos online about using slings?

Hi Hoonette and Kisidee. Thanks a lot for your answers and suggestions. Thanks especially for the slingmeet website. I have joined that group and plan to go to some of their outings! I am sure somewhere here will be able to help!
