Nursing Strike / Period

Hi everyone! I’m a new mum of a beautiful healthy 5month old (he will be 5months on Tuesday). I have been exclusively breastfeeding from day 1. We have navigated tongue tie, milk overflow, teething etc. the last 2 weeks have been particularly challenging. I got my period back at 9weeks pp and since then has settled into a routinely 28day cycle. I always notice a dip in milk supply before my period but once I’m on my period it goes back to normal. Two weeks ago my son started feeding 50%less his usual feeds and his gulping became an erratic quick sucking. I put it down to teething first but cried lots over stressing myself out. Ended up going to A&E last Sunday when I found two red streaks in his poos. A&E confirmed nothing to worry about as no fresh red blood so just a minor tummy bug and that feeding would resume again. Last week his feeding kept increasing day to day with beautiful gulping and I thought that’s great we are back on track again. Then last night at midnight I noticed my period had started again! I only just had my period and I’m on cycle day 18!!! My usual cycles are 28days! He did a good feed at 1am and at 2am but since then he is refusing to feed. My husband just gave him 40ml of expressed breast milk via syringe which he begrudgingly took. I’m beside myself worrying. I love BFing him. I’m worried about milk supply so I’m pumping. I don’t understand what’s happened between 1am last night and this morning which would make him refuse the boob. I don’t understand why I have got another period so early but even so he always fed whilst I’ve been on my period. I’m so worried. Can someone please offer just any advice. Many thanks xx

Try giving nurofen and if you have any anbesol liquid (suitable from 5 months) for teething. If he is still like this tomorrow get a GP appointment to rule out ear infection or tonsillitis.

I find magnesium supplements around my period helps my supply.

I found my DS showed Lots of fussy behaviour around this age too - suddenly really nosey in the day and too busy to want to feed. He had previously fed every 1-2hrs or even more frequently but at around 4.5-5.5months it all changed. Check nappy output is okay, express for comfort and keep and eye. Your body will regulate your milk into the new pattern. Just keep feeding responsively.
