Night terrors

My 17 month old DS has started having night terrors. I know this as he NEVER wakes up distressed he has always been a solid sleeper unless he's poorly.
When he is waking now he's sobbing, thrashing and not recognising who I am when I go in to him and he also doesn't want to be picked up or cuddled. All classic night terrors signs.
He's had a bad one tonight and I ended up putting him in my bed for a bit so he didn't end up trapping his arms and legs in the spokes of the cot whilst thrashing. I just surrounded him in pillows and lay with him to make sure he didn't fall off the bed.
Once he calmed down I put him back in his cot.
Did I do the right thing? Anything else I need or should be doing to help him?
TIA
