Autism speech experiences

My little one is nearly 18 months and is currently being assessed for autism. He babbles and says dada, mama, nana, baba (but doesn’t know what they mean/direct the words) he also does a low hum most of the day which I think is sensory.

I was wondering if anyone had any experiences with their own children or close children with autism and their speech development? I’m just so worried he will never talk or understand me. Maybe he is too young to tell at the moment, but I assume some noises and babbles are a good sign?!

TIA x

Can I ask how you were able to get him referred so early?

I’m no expert but I’d say making noises / babbling is a good sign. I have a family member who is 2.2 and doesn’t babble at all.

My daughter is 10 with autism and never stops speaking! Though she didn’t say a single word till she was 4.
