How to encourage confidence?

So DD is nearly 5 and started school in September.

Parents evening early on in the year was very positive.

Last term teacher asked us for a meeting. Teacher (T) said that DD is struggling with challenge and risk. It is very obvious in PE where she won’t join in with games and will stand back or refuse to take part.

T also said it’s been noticed in writing if she thinks it’s too tricky or if it’s something new. During phonics checks if she doesn’t think she is going to get it right she gives long explanations about her thoughts and why she said that sound.

T asked how DD is with party games and we said fine.

T has suggested they will do some activities with her to try and push her out her comfort zone.

DD does lack confidence at times e.g she fell off her scooter and now doesn’t want to ride it.

I took her to rainbows tonight as thought that may help. It was a huge battle getting her to go as she was scared. She wanted to know everything about it before we got there. Then she happily joined in the games but as soon as she saw that the game had a “getting out” element she came back to sit by me.

She’s said she doesn’t want to go back to rainbows.

Any idea how I can support her? Or any experience of something similar?

I don’t know how to help her.
