Leaking nappies

Mamk · 28/02/2022 03:22

My 14 week old son has started leaking through his nappies every night.
He is currently in size 4 pampers dry, he was originally wearing size 4 little angels but began leaking and waking up wet. Just out of curiosity, is there much difference in size between little angels and pampers? Size 3 little angels does not fit him as he was having leaks through the day in this size, but could size 3 pampers be okay? Not sure if it's worth sizing down in another brand???.....

If not, is there anything else I could use that may help with leaks or different brand of nappy that are good through the night? I never had an issue with pampers with my first so was shocked when I changed over and these also leaked.

Any advice would be hugely appreciated as he is getting wet and 9 times out of 10 he will just stay asleep and in the morning wake up very wet and cold and I am worried of him getting unwell due to lying in cold wet clothes all night.

TIA x

I used to put a smaller nappy on with a larger one over the top.
Lidl nappies are the best for not leaking.

bedheadedzombie · 28/02/2022 03:43

Are you putting the nappies on correctly? My 15 month old sleeps in size 4 pampers baby dry...

helloyoutoo8 · 28/02/2022 04:02

Try undoing his vest poppers as I find the nappies have no room to expand. It helps with my toddler x

Maybe double check the Pampers size guide? Sizing varies across different brands. My 98th centile 6 month old has only recently moved into size 4 pampers so that seems like a big size for a 14 week old to me. My packet says size 4 is from 9kg...??

Mamk · 28/02/2022 04:33

I will give Lidl nappies a try thank you! If not I will also try doubling up on the nappies!

I have been putting size 9-12months vests on him to give the nappy extra room just incase this was the issue, but it didn't seem to help.

His weight is fine against the size guide on the nappies, he was weighed a few weeks back at the start of the month and he was over 9kg back then, so not an average little 14 week old haha, however, he will be due to be weighed again in a few weeks, but I'm sure his weight and size guide will still line up. They are fine throughout the day it's just trying to keep him dry for the whole night.

Thank you for all replies x

Those nappies are leaking because they're too big! Size 4 nappies on a 14 week old?! That's obviously waaaaaayyyy too big. Size 2, maybe 3 but probably size 2.

DockOTheBay · 28/02/2022 05:25

Size 4 sounds big for a 14 week old. That's probably why they're leaking - because the legs aren't tight enough. Is the gel inside the nappy full of liquid when it leaks? If not, it will be because they're too big. I would try a size 2.

Mamk · 28/02/2022 05:42

Sorry, no you are both incorrect, they are not too big. He was in size 2 in the hospital when he was first born, size 1s were too small and by 3 weeks in size 3s and 3-6 month clothes. He was born a "big" baby and has stayed a big baby.

Yup gel and nappy are always full, like mentioned he is fine through the day but he sleeps all night so the long stretches of sleeping all night aren't holding his wee in. Also as mentioned his weight is in line with the size guide for weight and at the start of the month he was over 9kg so unless he has lost weight then he is still over 9kg which is the starting weight on the size guide so this is not the issueSmile.

Well why bother asking for opinions then if you have all the answers

KindlyKanga · 28/02/2022 06:11

Pampers size 3 are 6-10kg so I'd try going back to them. Maybe with a 4 over the top. Try the pants if the normal nappies are leaking.

KindlyKanga · 28/02/2022 06:14

Or if you're insistent you're right try size 4+ or night time pampers. It's what my LO used from 12-18 monthsish.

Mamk · 28/02/2022 06:35

"Thingymaboob" I was asking if there were other brands or any solutions such as possibly liners that other parents had tried, not to be told they are too big as I had already explained this was not the case. I mean I'm not sure why you'd think someone would put a nappy that was 2 sizes too big on a baby or assume that just because baby's are 14 weeks they should be in size 2s, It's merely common sense to go with the sizes really.... but thank you for your response, it just however wasn't helpful as it wasn't correct. Maybe ask next time instead of putting forward an invalid opinion that the nappy is "obviously waaaaaaayyyy too big". I could try size two but he outgrew them a while back.

Hi KindlyKanga, is there much difference with little angel sizing to pampers sizing though as he had outgrew the size 3s in little angels a few weeks back and had no issues until just a few nights ago. But if pampers are a little bigger sizing I could give those a try, possibly doubling up too.
I would have thought size 4+ were bigger than the 4s?
I know they say if the nappy begins to leak to go up a size but he 100% is not going to fit a size 5 nappy as it's not within his weight range.

I'm unsure what is causing the leaks as he has been in size 4s for abit now and he's had no issues, I'm wondering if it's because he sleeps over 12hours and the nappy just cannot hold the wee. But having said that, my first born used to be the same and had no issues.
Thank you for your reply.

I don't know I don't use little angels. Do you know where the leak is? Is it round the legs or up the back? 4+ is just more absorbant in the lidl ones.

The night time pampers ones hold a lot of wee. They are pricey but obviously you just use them at night so they last a while.

KindlyKanga · 28/02/2022 06:38

I know they say if the nappy begins to leak to go up a size not necessarily. It's trial and error with different brands and stuff.

Mamk · 28/02/2022 06:47

I might give the night time ones a go then and as you say use them just for a night as through the day he is fine. Thank you!

Yeah I'm going to say his clothes and sleep suit are more wet around the back/sides. But again unsure why. The only thing I find is the very top of his nappy sometimes folds over slightly as he wriggles and tries to roll but this is the same through the day so can't imagine this is the issue. Thank you for your help and responses!

Tbh I don't rate pampers anyway, they always leak. Honestly try Aldi nappies, all of mn recommend them as you'll probably see on this thread xx

Mamk · 28/02/2022 06:49

I'd like to mention he does take a lot of milk before bed though, he takes anything from 8 to 13oz before sleep, so again this could be a huge factor as to why he is leaking as he doesn't wake until morning so he's gone 12+ hours in the same nappy. If he ever does wake earlier I will change him and no matter the time it is still very heavy and full.

It's funny you mention this as everyone always said the same with my first little boy, but I had no issues and just couldn't see it and I just happened to receive a lot of little angels this time round as gifts so I thought I'd try them and honestly loved them until recently! I will give those a try, thank you! Xxx

I came on to say I would have thought size 4 was much too big for a baby that age. They are worked out using weight though.

Is your 14 week old between 20 and 44lb as per the packaging?

Try the + size if you are absolutely sure but I doubt it.

Hi, yes my son was weighed at the start of the month and he was over 9kg, I will check his red book but I'm sure he was 23lb 10, but definitely over the weight for the guide. I think he may just need to double up on nappies or try extra absorbing ones or go for different brands completely.
Thank you for your reply!

Sorry I meant 22lb 10 not 23, accidentally pressed the 3 by mistake haha.

I've found Tesco own brand to be pretty good. + Is more absorbent so might be worth trying.

Are you changing him through the night? With DS I always had to creep in and change his nappy or else he'd leak every night. DD used to have a dream feed at 11pm and I'd change her then which would get her through to the morning.

I would double check that because a typical weight for a 3-4 month old baby is around around the 15lb mark give or take a few pounds but obviously depends on birth weight and other factors.

I would expect a baby around 1 year old to weigh over 20lb!

Nappies need to fit snug around the legs, if they are loose at all the wee will just pour out, which if the nappy is too big would explain leaking.

I personally would drop to size 2 or 3 and use the plus size for extra absorbency.

HeadingForHome · 28/02/2022 07:14

Honestly I find my 4 month olds nappies leak daily as well, started about 16 weeks and is still going on (20 weeks).

I remember this stage with my previous two babies as well, they had a few months of leaking constantly, I'd tear my hair out and then it in would stop...

No idea what the solution is!

HeadingForHome · 28/02/2022 07:16

I do have big heavy babies with massive tummies and skinny legs though...
