Leaking nappies

Mamk · 28/02/2022 03:22

My 14 week old son has started leaking through his nappies every night.
He is currently in size 4 pampers dry, he was originally wearing size 4 little angels but began leaking and waking up wet. Just out of curiosity, is there much difference in size between little angels and pampers? Size 3 little angels does not fit him as he was having leaks through the day in this size, but could size 3 pampers be okay? Not sure if it's worth sizing down in another brand???.....

If not, is there anything else I could use that may help with leaks or different brand of nappy that are good through the night? I never had an issue with pampers with my first so was shocked when I changed over and these also leaked.

Any advice would be hugely appreciated as he is getting wet and 9 times out of 10 he will just stay asleep and in the morning wake up very wet and cold and I am worried of him getting unwell due to lying in cold wet clothes all night.

TIA x

Size 4 seems huge to me too but my 7mo has only just hit 9kg. Have you tried reusables? I find they leak less though it depends on brand and fit

Mamk · 28/02/2022 07:29

Just because there is an average weight does not mean all babies follow, my baby was born 10lb 11 and didn't lose any weight in t first week, he just gained. So his weight will be correct as it has followed the pattern, he is also long. Dropping to size 2 is definitely no option as he was born in size 2 nappies and by 3 weeks old in size 3s. Size 3s started leaking through the day and leaving marks on his thighs and waist so again, don't even know if that would work.

HeadingForHome, honestly it's so strange! I know the nappies are on correctly and they fit but just don't know why they leak, it's very frustrating as he doesn't wake up and I don't want him to become unwell.

Bornsloppy, I have never thought about Tescos! It's always a store I seem to forget haha! No I don't change him unless he wakes up, he will take a large amount of milk, sometimes the most being 13oz so he will sleep all the way through but if he ever does wake up I will give him a quick change to try and prevent leaking but most of the time he has already done it and if I do manage to catch it before it leaks then he does stay dry. But I've personally never been a one to wake mine when they are asleep. If there is no other solution I will have to consider it to keep him dry!

Thanks for responses!

He was born 10lb 14oz so was quite big born. I did consider it but I know nothing about those kind of nappies so I'd have to do some research on them! Thank you

Sounds like my son was, he was just under 11lbs when born and went straight into size 2 and 0-3 clothes. He was always at least one size ahead in clothes.

JustWonderingIfYou · 28/02/2022 07:36

My 2 year old is in size 4! Your baby must be enormous Confused Are you absolutely sure he is over 9kg?

We had to change our DS in the night until he was 8 months or so otherwise he leaked through. You might just have to schedule a change in the night.

Mamk · 28/02/2022 07:36

Can I just mention to everyone who thinks the nappies are too big, I really do appreciate it does seem very big for a baby my sons age, however he was born 10lb 14oz so he had a head start in the weight, he was also very long and also did not lose any weight.

The last time he was weighed he was 22lb 10, I mistakenly pressed 23, incase anyone is confused by that reply.

I think the issue could possibly be that he take a lot of milk before bed time and the nappy just cannot hold it for the long period of time he sleeps as they are just so heavy and full.

I appreciate everyone's replies but I do trust that I am able to put my son in the correct size nappy, I understand some might be too small for baby's but I would believe that it is common sense to put a nappy on a baby that is too big.

He is a very large baby and makes my 5 year old look small, he is in 6-9 month clothing also. My oldest son was also a large baby, however with a smaller birth weight but his weight shot up also , so he too was always in bigger nappies and bigger size clothes.

Thanks again

Just checked my son's red book and he was 9kg at 14 weeks. He was 13kg by 11 months and off the top of the chart Grin some babies are big.

It might just be a case of changing regularly, trying some different brands and waiting it out. I do like Mamia and the Tesco own brand. The Tesco posh brand Rascal and Friends have a small tummy and don't do up around DDs waist. You could also try a reusable cover over the top.

PurplePansy05 · 28/02/2022 07:48

He sounds like a big baby!

OP, IME different brands fit different babies differently and it also fluctuates depending on nappy size just to make it fun. So what's great for a 9 kg Teddy won't be good for a 9kg Bobby. This is because babies have different shapes and height, it's not just their weight.

The only answer is try out other brands yourself. Have you any friends using other brands so you can try out one or two without buying the whole pack?

The obvious thing that I didn't know about when DS was a newborn is to remember to pull out the frills around his legs and make sure the bit at the back doesn't fold. It tends to happen easily with size 4 nappies I find (although my DS is similar size to your son at nearly 7 mo, he's like an octopus when you put the nappy on him so it doesn't help Grin).

Other things I heard of would be to double nappy size smaller + size bigger. You could still try size 3 + size 4 of your current brand, I think 4+ is really rather big.

How much milk does he have immediately before bed? Can you spread his feeds or the amount he gets just before differently so he can pee before bed and have another nappy change right before?

Ahaha yeah that was like my first, he only lost weight when he started walking and he's now skin and bones, despite what he eats!

I think I might go tescos own as a few people suggested them! It's all trial and error with babies, I never had this sort of issue with my first!

Thank you!

He is big for his age. From 28 weeks pregnant they estimated him to be big and pushed for induction but I refused until I was 4 days over, he was actually bigger than they estimated too! And he's continued to gain weight.

Unfortunately I have no one around me with baby's similar size. My sister had a baby 3 weeks ago but she's ended up with all my unused clothes and nappies

He will have a 9-10oz bottle at say 3:30-4:30 then he will go in the bath and be put to bed around 6:30-7 but he will take another bottle which can vary between 9oz to 13oz.
Through the day he will have a bottle every 2-4 hours again, anything between 8oz to 12oz. Sometimes he will wake up around 2-3 for another bottles but he sleeps through more than he wakes.

OP posts:
KindlyKanga · 28/02/2022 08:11

Mine was similar with the bottles at night. It was a nightmare if I changed them in the night as then they wouldn't settle again without another bottle! They were a long skinny baby though. As PP said there just seemed to be a phase of about 4 weeks when any nappy I tried leaked I think they were in size 3. It's frustrating but I think it is just a case of trying nappies out and seeing which is best.

PurplePansy05 · 28/02/2022 08:17

These are big bottles. I mostly breastfed but whatever bottles DS had, he's never had more than 7oz in one go. We did a bottle before bed and he doesn't seem to have any issues leaking overnight after 7oz, though it's a heavy nappy. It sounds like your DS pees a lot after a lot of milk which is, well, normal Grin But then you either change him more often which might not be good if he sleeps through, or you change how much he gets in the eve, spread out the amount of milk differently so a bigger feee mid-afternoon and a smaller in the eve.

PurplePansy05 · 28/02/2022 08:21

FWIW if you try Aldi Mamia, don't bother with the eco range - whilst good, it's smaller than normal Mamia. Mamia Premium is also smaller than standard.

We didn't find Lidl Lupilu any good ever and Asda own brand never fitted my DS either (he has long legs if this is what makes a difference?). Both leaked like hell. Pampers gave him nappy rash so we swapped to Mamia, but had to play around with the sizes. Never tried Tesco, sorry. It's so tricky! 🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

Caspianberg · 28/02/2022 08:39

Reusable. Ours tots bots are for approx weight 9lb-35lb. They just popper and Velcro adjust over time. My almost 9lb baby fitted soon after birth, and still in now at almost 2 years.

Size 4 still sounds too big though. I know you say big baby, but Ds is now 22months, wears age 2-3 clothing and still fits in the size 4 pampers we bought a year ago as back ups travelling. You say he’s large for 14 weeks, but in 6-9month clothing.

Caspianberg · 28/02/2022 08:41

Also they are huge bottles. Ds was also mainly breastfed, but largest bottle was 5oz. If he’s drinking 13oz every 2 hrs a regular nappy simply won’t last 12 hrs overnight and you probably need to change him overnight

Mamk · 28/02/2022 08:52

I agree, they are very big bottles but his reflux paediatrician said he is bang on for his weight, so he's not over fed

He's ready for the next size up in clothes which will be 9-12, so yeah I would definitely say big baby considering he is only 3 months old. I think it must be the amount of milk he takes throughout the day. Possibly when he starts weaning he won't take as much milk so won't wet through.

I will definitely be trying some of the suggestions, I appreciate it everyone thank you! If not I'll just preserve and hopefully it's not a thing that lasts forever

I have a small baby who has been in size 4 since he weighed 12lbs, so the size guide doesn't always match up. The Pampers baby-dry night nappy pants work really well for him and we haven't had any leaks from these yet. They're relatively expensive but if you only need one overnight anyway they're worth it!

Yea exactly! Thank you. I think people are sort of missing the point of this post a little bit. I wasn't wondering whether the nappies were for his weight or not because to put it politely, I am not stupid, I know when a nappy fits and when it doesn't. It's ridiculous that people think parents lack that sort of knowledge to begin with l. As someone mentioned earlier what works for one baby won't work for the other. Some baby's are bigger and some are smaller.

I am going to try another kind of nappy even if it's just to use during the night.

Thank you!

Also, I mentioned reusables, inside Ds overnight nappies he has a washable insert. It’s made of bamboo so absorbs a lot. You have nappy, insert, then fleece liner so the wet goes though the fleece and leaves butt dry.
You could add an insert and liner into disposable nappies I’m sure.you can buy disposable liners also

RebeccaCloud9 · 28/02/2022 10:00

Have you tried the PLUS nappies? So 3+ or 4+? We always used these at night and they were a game changer. It isn't a plus/half size, they are for heavier filling, so perfect for overnight nappies.

RandomMess · 28/02/2022 10:06

I had a huge baby too (breast fed).

Has he got chunky legs or is there a possibility it's leaking out the side?

My monster often leaked overnight because by that age she did power pees. Absolutely try 3+ and 4+, if size 4 are roomy enough try a booster either bamboo (pre wash several times first) or mothercare used to sell some sort of disposable booster once upon a time.

Mamk · 28/02/2022 10:10

I'm thinking of trying the liners or another brand of nappies. I have been looking at bamboo ones, think they are cheeky pandas or something???
I'm going to try something different to try keeping him dry, I'm going to look at all suggestions and see which one is the best.

I haven't tried 4+, I may try them for bed for the extra protection. I think a lot of the issue is the amount of milk he drinks so hopefully once he starts weaning he will cut down on the large bottles, in the meantime I am going to trial and error different kinds!

If he has last mil k at 6/7pm, can you just change him in the dark around 10pm before you sleep. So he’s peed majority into first nappy

Mamk · 28/02/2022 10:14

Yes his legs are chunky and his back and belly are quite big. So the little tabs weren't even reaching the little size up indicators. Yeah I find he is wet around the back/sides as if it's coming out the top, like the nappy got too full sort of speak.

Think the + ones might be what he needs to hold all that wee in.

RandomMess · 28/02/2022 10:17

I honestly can't remember how I solved it in the end, we used cloth during the day and just the one disposable overnight and it took a while to solve it.
