Potty training with speech delay

I need some tips! My little boy has just turned 3, and at the moment doesn’t speak (he’s very vocal and does try and form words so isn’t mute) we’re in talks with his HV about this. He’s also showing some signs of ASD (he sometimes struggles understanding instructions).

He starts nursery in April and I’d like to try and potty train him by then. He’s started pulling his nappies off too so that’s pushed me to give potty training another go.

Anyone had experience with potty training when your child can’t communicate very well? Any (helpful) advice welcome 😊 I’m going to purchase a travel potty for out and about as well! Im just at a loss where to start with a child that doesn’t talk to me..

Yes my son was non verbal when I potty trained him, first thing I did was making sure he came with me or my husband when we went to the toilet.this got him interested in it. I then got him to choose his potty and bug boy pants, and for first few days I let him go round the house naked and ask him very 30min or so to sit on the potty.

My son was non-verbal whilst potty training and we found Mrs Wee & Mr Poo very helpful. The pictures are very clear and the words rhyme which helps too. It's also very funny!
