does my baby sleep too much?

everyone I ask seems to think I am mad for worrying (most of them have kids who don't sleep the best/average) but my baby (5 months old) seems to sleep an awful lot. She always wants to go down to sleep about 5.30pm and will be asleep normally until 9am/9.30. She takes 2 naps during the day - an hour in the am and 2 hours in the pm - meaning she is awake about 6 hours a day! Is this normal or should I be worried? It creates havoc with us going out anywhere.

If your daughter is happy with it then it's right for her. My DD2 always slept loads and was probably very similar at 5 months. She's now almost 18 months and she still sleeps from 7pm to 8 or 9am and has a 2 hour nap in the afternoon.

I would advise seeing if your daughter can sleep in her pushchair or pram though because then it doesn't tie you to the house so much. I was walking miles and miles during the spring of last year and DD2 slept during much of it whilst I was pushing the pushchair.

Lucky you ...

I used to worry my daughter was sleeping too much to, she seemed to sleep pretty much all day and night until she was about 8 months old, im lucky to be able to get her to nap now. What I have found is that although she is very active during the day now she has slept quite soundly throughout the night since about 6 months, pretty much 6pm to 7.30am. She is perfectly healthy and was obviously getting just what she needed sleep wise. I wouldn't worry too much but would do as the last post said and let your baby sleep in the buggy, just to get you out and about, mine only woke up briefley when being transfered from car to buggy.

Thanks for the reassurance. Yes she does sleep in a pram if I take her out but unsettled sleep - wakes up frequently and is upset.
When I've said this to most people they say 'lucky you' but it has been worrying me. So glad to hear other babies do this too!
