Book recommendations for 6 year old

My 6 year old girl loves her bedtimes stories and I’m looking for some books to read to her to bridge that gap between picture books and big chapter books.

She loves a story but I’m finding some of the books we are reading are more suitable for younger children. I’m happy to keep reading these but would like to introduce some more grown up books too.

We tried reading The Magic Faraway Tree but didn’t get very far as she said it was boring without pictures! As an avid reader myself, I would love for her to carry on enjoying stories and reading.

Any recommendations please?

I recommend taking her to a book shop and seeing what catches her eye. Be prepared for Rainbow Fairies...

My DDs favourites at that age were...
Isadora Moon
Hotel Flamingo
Magic Ballet Shoes (Darcey Bussell)
Hotel Flamingo
Fabio the Flamingo detective
Mr Penguin
Rainbow Fairies
Worst Witch
Hubble Bubble
Jolly Rodgers
Dave the Pigeon
Claude

They didn't particularly like the old books like Enid Blyton at that age... they love her school books now though. But the newer stuff is often illustrated and more relatable.

My daughter really likes
The trouble with Daisy books (written by the same person as oi frog books)

I’m trying to get her into Roald Dahl - she enjoyed The Twits and Matilda

Rabbit and Bear books have lots of pictures. 13 Storey treehouse series has some illustrations.

Do you have a library near you? I went in and grabbed a selection purely based on them having both chapters and pictures. This helped me find a few authors she liked.

At the moment it's ones about animals she is into - Dick King Smith and Michael morpugo have been a success.

My (just turned) 7yo DS really loved The Christmasaurus by Tom Fletcher. And we are currently reading Toto the Ninja Cat. He just makes me promise to show him the pictures when they come up. It is a bit of a transition period but they do get used to it.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions, we shall work our way through them!
We are heading into town this week so will look in the library although it doesn’t always have the greatest choice of these type of books.
