16 month old baby

Hi all,

First time mom. I am a bit concerned about my 16 month old girl. It’s our first baby so probably just overthinking but she doesn’t talk much. She says mama, dada and papa (grandpa), baba and nana( don’t quite know what those mean yet). She is very active, good eye contact, smiles a lot and likes cuddles.

I am worried she is not progressing at the same pace as our doctor said she should be imitating animals by now and she doesn’t. Just says those words. She is pointing at things and understands certain things I say to her. Like go get your teddy.

Is there anything to worry about here? I fear autism but I don’t know. By 18 months it says she should be saying like 20 words…

Thank you

Some children just take longer than others to talk/walk etc.

If everything else is going well and she interacts with people as normal apart from not having many words yet I wouldn’t worry.

They all vary so much.
My son didn't talk until 2.5

Her understanding is there, along with afew words these are both very positive.

She sounds completely normal.

My 16mo says Hiya and dada but he often says that at any man with glasses so that's fun.

Not in any way qualified in this area but from my understanding I think the pointing and understanding commands are very good indications that she's not autistic x

Mine didn't speak till after second birthday. By the time he started school his speech was advanced for his age. 13 now, bright, sociable, confident. It sounds like your daughter understands what's going on around her and engages with people. If her vocabulary hasn't expanded in a few months you could see if there's any help available, but definitely don't panic.

My little boy is 16 months to and not talking either talks in his own little way all the time though so Im not worried.

My little girl is 18mths and says mama and dada only, no animal sounds or anything! She absolutely knows how to communicate what she wants/ needs so I’m not worried - her older sibling spoke much more at this age but again I’m reassured they all develop in own time !

My son is also 16 months and he doesn't talk at all occasionally mamama but nothing else. He claps and waves. My DD was much more advanced but all children are different

Too young to be worrying. She'll get there.
