Reflux?? Allergy??

My son is 4 weeks old and since 2 weeks he’s been quite sick (I’m formula feeding). The odd time it’s just a little normal amount but for the most part it soaks through a whole muslin! He’s had bits of blood in the sick, he coughs often when feeding, hiccups and generally doesn’t burp very well. I decided to put him on thicker milk which helped with the sick but he seemed to get constipated from it so when I took him to gp who says it’s all normal, he doesn’t have reflux and it’s just something to put up with I took him off the milk and back on regular. Now he’s back to being sick a lot again but I’ve noticed in a morning and on a night he’s extremely noisy? He makes the loudest grunting throaty sounds like he’s straining but nothing comes out! Its very hard to sleep through and not sure if it’s connected! He’s had baby acne and dry skin since this has all started too but I’m not convinced it is acne as it’s spreads to his knees too.. can’t help but think it’s a milk allergy but nobody will listen to me! I’m sick of getting pushed away by healthcare professionals 😩

A lot of what you describe sounds like normal newborn baby grunting noises and sick to me too sorry. They often have an under developed larynx and the noises can be worse at night for the fourth trimester. Are you practising paced bottle feeding and wonky winding?

@WTF475878237NC Tried paced feeding but it’s not made a difference but never heard of wonky winding I’ll give that a try! Hopefully this is all normal i hate to think he’s in a constant misery and I’m not helping!

If he doesn't kick his legs, bring them up to his chest in pain, scream or shout in discomfort during and after feeds etc then I wouldn't assume it's anything other than fourth trimester/developmental. Coughing, spluttering and bringing up milk can be signs of too fast a flow/too big teats etc as well as the larynx that he'll grow out of (or rather it'll grow!).

It does sound like a possible issue with cmpa. Sadly with babies you have to really push and push to be listened too.

I would give the AllergyUK people a call tomorrow for advice, they have helped me lots.

I think it sounds like cmpa. My 13 week old has it and was very noisy at night when he was suffering. You need to just be assertive with the GP, say you think he has cmpa and you want to trial a hypoallergenic milk. Don't take no for an answer. There is a brilliant group on Facebook called CMPA support and advice, really worth joining.

Thanks all. He’s had blood in his poo this morning, just trying to get in somewhere to be seen. He acts constipated but his stools are very loose, he’s also very snotty/sneezy after feeds didn’t realise that was a symptom of an allergy till now!
