Not babbling yet…

Hi all,

My baby has just turned 9 months old (this is his corrected age as he was born 7 weeks early) and is not babbling yet eg dadada, bababa

From reading online (I know!) it seems he should have started by now so I’m a little concerned. He makes lots of noise ahh, ehh, gee and has started the lovely screeching a couple of weeks ago. He will also say ahh to get my attention and ‘chat’ back to me. He was late to roll back to front so went quiet while he was learning that 6 weeks ago but is back to his loud self now.

I’m reading lots, singing etc and was thinking of booking a hearing test just to be sure. Has anyone’s baby been late to babble and everything was ok? FTM combined with a premature baby so I’m a bit anxious

My DD would shriek and make all sorts of weird noises but no babbling. She didn’t start babbling until after her 1st birthday (same time as she started pulling to stand). She’s 21 months now and doesn’t shut up (babble wise, not many proper words 😂)

I wouldn't worry too much OP. Every baby is different. My DS didn't start babbling until pretty much dead on his 1st birthday. His physical development always seemed to take priority over his communication skills but all of a sudden he started waving, blowing kisses, babbling, pointing, etc all at once when he turned 1.

I don't think it's officially a cause for concern until a child is 18 months and not doing these things (?), but have a chat with a health visitor if it will help put your mind at ease.

Keep on doing the reading, singing, etc that's what I did and still do, it will all be going in.

Thanks for the replies! I think I get overly anxious about some things as so many babies I know are doing some things my baby isn’t - I need to learn to relax. I’ve a check up with the hospital in June anyway so I’ll keep going for now

He’s great! He didn’t start properly babbling like bababa etc until he was 12 months but he caught up - now he’s 2 and has around 80 words and starting to put 2 words together.

I'm so glad I found this post! My lb is almost 10 months old and still not babbling he has lots of shrieking, cooing etc plus waving, pointing and clapping but Google has had me really worried. It's lovely to see so many experiences of babbling at 12months. OP - it's great to read that your little one is doing so well!
