DC is 9 months and has nearly grown out of the nappy sizes

DD is 9 months and is wearing size 7 Pampers Baby Dry. I've just noticed that size 8 is the last size within the Baby Dry range so I wondered what happens when they get too big for the sizes? Do you upgrade to pants/pull up nappies or something? I plan to start potty training when she's around 18 months or slightly before but for now she's way too young to start potty training (or is sheHmm)

I haven't looked around in the supermarkets properly but just thought I'd take it to MN first lol

Don't feel dumb! That's the beauty of an anonymous forum! Glad you sorted the problem.

RandomMess · 11/02/2022 21:10

Not as dumb as one poster that bought their DC clothes going by their age alone not what actually fitted them!

sadandcrazy · 11/02/2022 21:10

@OwlNoises101

18 months is not too young for potty training. I trained one DC at 17 months and one at 20 months.
Slightly off topic but please send me some tips on how to do this!

Glad you sorted it out!

In regards the potty training. Don't get too disheartened if your child isn't ready at 18m.

They're either ready... or they're not. You can't make them ready and forcing the issue will lead to very stressed parents and a distressed child

Abridget7 · 11/02/2022 21:11

I've read some strange things on here but this is up there...

RussianSpy101 · 11/02/2022 21:11

@00100001 yes. Those little steps you can buy were perfect. Infact, DD used a potty initially but DS2 wanted to use the toilet like his siblings.
It was “a weeeee” not “mummy I need to go to the toilet for a wee” but yes, they could both get onto a toilet using a small step.
We helped them with trousers / leggings initially but only for the first couple of weeks. I assume everyone does this regardless of the age of the child?

RussianSpy101 · 11/02/2022 21:13

@sadandcrazy With my DC, it was seeing older siblings or cousin using the toilet and wanted to be “big” like them. It’s important that it’s only done when the child is ready. My DS1 wasn’t trained until almost 3 but DD and DS2 were both 18 months.

Pinkflask · 11/02/2022 21:13

I’m glad my comment helped - it just rang a bell that I’d heard of this happening before! It’ll save you money too - go and get Lidl or Aldi size 3 and be happy how much cheaper they are. It’s not stupid, how do you know when you’ve never used nappies before? I did think I could probably get my 8yo in a size 7 so something had to be a bit wrong…

JemimaTiggywinkle · 11/02/2022 21:14

Now imagining your DD in nappies up to her armpits Grin they will have kept her nice and toasty over winter at least!

MsChatterbox · 11/02/2022 21:14

If you buy a nappy too big it will do up higher on the tummy and so will "fit" the bigger part of the tummy. A smaller nappy will do up closer to the hips so will fit the smaller part of the tummy. I do remember having the same worry with my son but then as he grew older he grew slimmer and fit in the same size for ages.

Theunamedcat · 11/02/2022 21:16

@flowervest75

Wow guys. I had a pack of size 3 Pampers Baby Dry in the cupboard as I never got round to using it. I've just put it on DD now and it literally seems perfect😳

I sent a video to my mum explaining how I think I've been getting the nappy sizes wrong all this time and she said the size 3 fits perfectly. Seems to be size 3 maybe going onto size 4 in a couple of months.

As someone mentioned, I assumed the straps had to meet in the middle everytime and once that'd stop happening, she moves onto the bigger size. I also assumed the nappy has to cover their belly button and not be underneath it. Please don't ask me why I thought this!! No one told me this but this is how the nappy would fit when DD was newborn so I just assumed that's how it goes🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

I knew something was wrong here but just couldn't figure it out. I'm literally mind blown and feel so dumb but thanks so much for all the comments. The links helped so much as I was able to run my finger through the size 3 waistband and through the leg cuff.
Can't believe it🤦‍♀️ I feel so dumb

Children are a learning experience I didn't even know how to change a nappy when I had my first I was 25 ffs I read the side of the packet on the post natal ward 😳 the nurses were horrified Grin
MsChatterbox · 11/02/2022 21:16

Sorry I didn't see your latest update when I posted!

TheCanyon · 11/02/2022 21:17

@Abridget7 isn't it just.

FavouriteFortnight · 11/02/2022 21:17

Ha, I was wondering how big this 9mo could possibly be!

My absolutely gigantic 25kg 5yo still wears size 7 pull ups at night.

MyDcAreMarvel · 11/02/2022 21:18

What that makes no sense. My ds with SEN is 7 years and wears size 6 pull ups.

Pinkflask · 11/02/2022 21:19

Some people are feeling very smug…well, great for you that you have been perfect at every stage of parenthood but we’ve all done silly things and this is supposed to be a forum where mums can share these things without judgement! I know I did some daft stuff when my babies were little but it’s completely normal.

flowervest75 · 11/02/2022 21:19

My mum keeps telling me to calm down and not worry about it but I honestly feel soooo stupid😂 can I use the excuse that I had her 21 so I'm 'young and dumb' hehe😬
(I know I can't but I'm just trying to push my luck😂)

Now that I've established the problem, can I ask how you know when they're ready to go up a size? Is it when you can no longer but a finger or two through the waistband/leg cuff? Does the nappy no longer stay strapped?
I need new tell tell signs seeing as I've been looking out for the completl

They start to get red marks around the legs and the nappies start to leak when they’re too small.

flowervest75 · 11/02/2022 21:20

Posted too soon!

I need new tell tell signs seeing as I've been looking out for the completely wrong signs.

I also plan to use Aldi nappies but when I went on Sunday, I looked and saw DD had already grown out of their size range! Now I know she's a size 3, I'll happily trot along this weekend to pick up a nice, cheap pack!

toomuchlaundry · 11/02/2022 21:21

Nighttime dryness is nothing to do with training so you may still need nappies for that

How do 14 month olds sort all their clothes out when going to the loo and wipe themselves properly?

Kinko · 11/02/2022 21:21

I'm with you OP. My 6 month old has just go into size 5.

All the 6month babies in my NCT are in size 4.

I don't understand what's happening with the nappy situation either.

My baby has seen the HV and she says she's tracking perfectly. She's a bigger baby but only being at the top end of normal (not abnormally large - as some horrendously rude poster phrased it).

I understand the question, so keen to hear some decent responses! Maybe we're not putting the nappy on right?

mynameiscalypso · 11/02/2022 21:22

I only ever moved up a size when they began to leak.

Svara · 11/02/2022 21:25

@Pinkflask

Yes, only when necessary as you get less in a pack!
Kinko · 11/02/2022 21:27

@Pinkflask

It was the red marks that prompted me to go up a size.

My baby had never leaked out though.

Also the tags that stick together should the top tag reach round to the sides?

@Pinkflask ah yes it was your comment about the tabs meeting in the middle. Thank you!! Will definitely be giving Aldi's nappies a try too. I've heard good things about them
