Baby sleep advice please ?

Little one has just turned 6 weeks old. Happy as anything - an extremely hungry baby from day one never had any issue with feeding! (Exclusively formula feeding for context)

I don’t know if it’s because I’m a first time mum and keep comparing myself and what I’m doing but I seen someone mention their baby who is 9 weeks old sleeps 8-6? That’s great for them! But it made me wonder is something wrong am I not doing something right?

Little one wakes 2-4 hours for feeds, more close to 2 hours with the odd one 4 hour gap but not often at all only a few times in the week. We’re still letting them guide us as we feel they’re too young to implement a routine but when I send this I thought should I start?

I can’t see my baby in 3 weeks time sleeping for that long without a feed! It just feels impossible as in the night it is usually 2/2.5 hours between feeds

Anyone have any advice? Is it normal? Will baby settle into a routine and eventual start sleeping longer stretches?

I am so grateful and not trying to complain! I am just a bit tired and wonder if baby will ever stretch feeds out

Totally normal and they will stretch feeds out eventually Smile I never thought DS would go longer than 2 hours at one stage but now (touch wood) it's generally at least 4 hours through the night, usually 5, sometimes 6-7! He's 12 weeks. Last night he went to bed at 8, woke for a feed at 1.45am and then back to sleep til 7am. It felt like a miracle, I won't lie 😂

Keep being led by baby and responding to what they need, try hard not to compare with other people as it never helps (I'm guilty of this too!)

9 weeks old sleeping 8-6 straight through would be the exception.

Just saw a survey on another site for parents of 9-10m old babies - 25% were sleeping through. 65% were waking a few times and 10% were not having any long stretches. I can't guarantee it was a fair sample but that sounds about right from the mums I talk to. Sleeping through at 6 weeks is definitely the exception.

Hey OP, at 6 weeks if a baby slept through the night I’d be worried… my baby slept for 8 hours at 4 weeks, I woke up thinking it was great only to discover he had a fever and straight to AnE (it was RSV) Your baby is completely normal, I know it’s tiring but normal.
My first baby started sleeping through at 12 weeks (as in feed at 8pm and then next at 4 or 5pm)
My second baby is 18 weeks now and still wakes up every 2-4 hours for feeds. No matter how hard I try and give him more during the day he still wakes up at night- hang in there, I’m with you, it shall get better soon

My little DD was a bug like that still at 6 weeks old. At 8 weeks she'd do 5 or 6 hours overnight and now at 11 weeks she ranges from 5 hours somenights to 8 others. I find she sleeps longer the nights we bath her before bed.

During the day she wants a feed every 3 or 4 hours and is taking 5oz roughly every feed. Shes also Formula fed :)

Hi all.
I Need some advice please. I have a 6.5 month old beautiful chilled boy. He is EBF and goes down around 6-6.30pm. I base it 2-2.5 hours from his last nap.
The only problem is, he wakes up every 2 hours and like to be soothed for 5 minutes before going straight back down.
Will he grow out of wanting the breast? Or do I need to sleep train him? Occasionally he goes for 4 hour stretches.
He’s always woken up frequently since birth and never really slept long stretches. He did show signs of going 5/6 hours for 3 nights a month ago but nothing since.
He also has 1-2 solids per day.
Feel lost and feel like I’m doing something wrong. Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Many thanks.

@MumDM my alkomat 5 month old is bottle fed (I never wanted to BF for the exact reason you said) but he does the exact same thing as your baby :) he goes down 6:30-7 and then wakes every 3 hours wanting a bottle. Even if he eats a lot during the day he will still wake up every 2,5-3 hrs at night. I was thinking I should start sleep training and not giving him milk at night but becouse he is quite a bad eater and often doesn’t eat a lot during the day I have no choice but obviously feed at night. They will grow out of it I hope, let’s hang in there:) my first son was sleeping through the night from 3 months and I was sure this baby will be the same but nope..

Hi Bluemamma,

Yes let’s hope they grow out of it. I’m thinking of sleep training next week. It’s so hard isn’t it.
Thanks for getting back to me Smile.
Take care

That baby is an outlier, not yours.
Sounds like you and baby are doing fab.
There is a huge variation and some babies naturally sleep more.

My DS wasn't a sleeper and would wake every 60-90 minutes until he was one.
It's much better now but he still hasn't slept through and he's 2!
