DS is 15 months and LOVES books! We read each one multiple times daily and I’m getting a bit fed up with our current selection!

What’s YOUR favourite book to read your child? And what’s your child’s favourite?

He’s a big fan of all the Julia Donaldson ones - especially Tabby McTat 🤣 we have a great litter secondhand book shop in our village so would love to go a walk today and hunt for some of your recommendations 😊

Novelty is the most important thing imo, after 4 years of rereading Grin. Though I can read Dr Seuss, except the early shit ones, Burglar Bill and Oi... more than most.

I like Bumpus Jumpus Dinosaurumpus, Tyranosaurus Drip, The Detective Dog, Never Ask a Dinosaur to Dinner, 10 Little Pirates. Max the Cat books, This is not my Hat, Last Days of Summer… I could go on I think. I guess I love kid’s books. 😁

My 15 month old loves the Julia Donaldson lift-the-flap books (Fox’s socks etc) and one called Peekaboo most of all though.

The one about paper dolls. Makes me cry every time but I'm totally soppy!

I love you little monster for sentiment. Poo in the zoo for fun!

SparkleSky · 07/02/2022 10:12

I love the my naughty little sister stories. For toddlers and pre school I enjoy The big hungry bear; Stanley's stick; Du iz tak?; not now Bernard; peace at last; Peepo and ten little fingers and ten little toes. I love you little monster makes me cry!

You Choose and Just Imagine were both really fun to read, because you could have a different discussion each time. (although 15 months is too young for those really)

I loved In the Night Kitchen by Maurice Sendak, for its weirdness. The Octonauts books (the good, long ones, like the Frown Fish, not the short TV tie-in ones).

For younger kids - the Wonky Donkey, all the Maisy books, The Snatchabook (so cute!), Blue Kangaroo, and of course Richard Scarry, especially What do people do all day.

And then the best of all picture books - Russell Hoban's two Captain Najork stories. My DC still read them from time to time and they're practically teenagers!

Little people, big dreams. We are building DD a collection, all inspiring stories about inspiring people. I've learnt a thing or two along the way too. Teaches history, politics, human rights etc in a really fun way, fabulous illustrations and many of the individuals have overcome adversity. Eg Marie curie couldn't go to uni in her home country as she is female so moved to Paris and won 2 noble prizes etc. DD is little but loves the pictures and I hope they will grow with her.

I don't have a favourite but I can't get the rhyme from the paper dolls out of my head.

MrsGhastlyCrumb · 07/02/2022 12:35

I Want My Hat Back is a firm favourite here.

17caterpillars1mouse · 07/02/2022 12:39

My dds are a bit older but I loved reading (and still do to my 3 year old) Giles Andrae's Winnie-the-pooh the great heffalump hunt. It's a lovely rhyming story about friendship, flows beautifully and has lovely artwork

17caterpillars1mouse · 07/02/2022 12:41

Also I second peepo (I still know all the words now) and Each Peach Pear Plum (again know it off by heart)

Mackmama · 07/02/2022 12:41

Dog Gone by Rob Biddulph is great and the illustrations are lovely.

kmbegs · 07/02/2022 12:45

I love "angry cookie" because I relate to it so much 😂

RS29 · 07/02/2022 12:46

@Chely A few have mentioned Paper Dolls so it’s on my list 😊

@MrsGhastlyCrumb DS is actually obsessed with hats so that sounds perfect!

@17caterpillars1mouse I don’t know why I haven’t thought of Winnie The Pooh! Sounds perfect! I’ll see if I can get a copy.

I love picking up lovely books for him when I see them, even if they’re a bit too old for him now. I have beautiful illustrated copies copies of The Magic Faraway Tree (my childhood fav!), Alice in Wonderland and The Jungle Book that are away on his bookcase for when he’s bigger. Hoping he’ll continue to live his books 🤞🏼🤞🏼

Many years ago (DDs are now 16) I used to love reading Slinky Malinki Catflaps to them.

Just the rhythm of the words had them asleep on minutes and I read it so many times I knew it off by heart & could read if on the dark!

UnalliterativeGeorge · 07/02/2022 13:02

The elephant and the bad baby

kittenkipper · 07/02/2022 13:07

I haven't read to my children for years, they are almost grown ups it seems. But still 10 years on I know all the words to each peach pear plum and the paper bag princess.

Wind in the Willows

Barleysugar85 · 07/02/2022 13:13

All the Rachel Bright books- we love them as much as Julia Donaldson! The pictures and rhymes are just perfect.

Any of the theres a monster/ dragon/ alien in my book books. They are full of silly instructions like 'theres a monster in your book! quick shake the book to get rid of him! Give him a blow! Shout loudly!'

Personally I enjoy the Mog books, Not Now Bernard, 5 Minutes Peace and The Giant Jam Sandwich but they are nostalgic from my childhood.
