Weaning - are we doing it right?

Baby is about to turn 6mo so we have started offering her small amounts of the foods we are eating to try.

However she doesn't seem to be too interested in actually eating the food, just picking it up and smearing it, throwing it, occasionally munching on the end of something but most of it ends up stuffed in the high chair or chucked on the floor.

Is this normal?? Shes still having her milk so I'm not worried about her going hungry but I just wonder if we should be encouraging her more to actually eat things or just go with it for now.

Totally normal, go with it, well done!
Why would she know that's what it's for? At this age, it's exploration and learning

Normal.
Just leave it in front of her and she'll copy.
Your see some food is getting consumed when you change her nappies.

I always remember the health visitor telling me 'food is for fun until 12 months' so yes I wouldn't worry Smile enjoy the mess

Hey, well done to you and LO! Sounds like you're doing amazing so far!

Totally normal, I've also just started weaning my 6mo and I think he's only really swallowed approx 1 mouthful of food so far hahah. They learn my exploration, so playing with and smashing the food up is all part of the process!

One thing that does help is eating at the same time. Show them the food, take a small bite of it and then offer them that piece. I find if they see us eating it first they realise its food and are more willing to try it.

Also when you do eat with them making really exaggerated chewing actions (the sounds aren't pleasant mind) helps them to learn to chew and to know what to do with the food once its in their mouth.

If you continue as you are LO should pick up interest soon I'm sure!
