I definately wouldn't risk steam - the danger of burns is too high.

You could take them into the bathroom whilst you run a hot shower, try Saline nose drops or you can get plug ins (calpol do one) for their bedroom. You could also try a little snuffle babe or vicks on their feet, as long as there's no risk of them touching it and rubbing their eyes.

Calpol plug in vaporiser works well

We have a Vicks humidifier which is a lifesaver. We only run it at night to help the DC sleep, but it's wonderful. We have the Calpol plugins at DM's for if they get colds whilst we're staying there, but nothing beats the humidifier.

Calpol plug in is fantastic, I've actually bought one for myself too!

This. It's the only thing I've found that actually helps with a cough. The aromatherapy pads are £££ but you can just add baby olbas oil to an old one.

@CoodleMoodle Vicks humidifier is that the normal one or a special for kids?

Just the normal one! It's the Warm Mist Humidifier. I think there's a new model but I imagine it works the same way. We got ours when DD was a baby so it's a good 8yrs old and still works brilliantly. There's a little thing at the top where you can put a blob of vapour rub or olbas oil, so you don't have to buy anything special. It also works without that, with steam only.
