4 week old - lack of dirty nappies

Hi guys,

My 4 week old bf baby hasn't had a dirty nappy in three days! He's having lots of wet ones as normal so I don't think he's dehydrated. I can see him trying to go sometimes after a feed but nothing has appeared yet.

Is this something I should be concerned about?

Thanks!

Are they formula or breastfed?

If breastfeeding, this is totally normal. My 7 week old poos once a week (and god help us if we're out of the house when it happens)!

Yes. Even in breast babies this is of concern before 6 weeks. It’s not a big worry but get a GP appointment and in the mean time bicycle their legs can help.

When my son was a similar age he didn't go for 5 days. I called the doctor and he said it wasn't a concern unless he reached 7 days and still hadn't gone. (He was formula fed if that's relevant). So I wouldn't worry too much but it's probably worth a call to the doctor or midwife just for reassurance.

Maybe try gently massaging in circular motion around the bellybutton, bicycle legs and apply gentle pressure to the feet - up one side, across the top under the toes and down the other side. I’ve found these methods help.
