What would you be keeping an eye out for?

Eileen101 · 26/01/2022 21:59

In the nicest way, you're overreacting unless he has known allergies :)

I say that as an allergy mum.

enjoyingscience · 26/01/2022 22:00

What is the problem exactly?

Are you worried about allergies?

If he has no allergies, he will be absolutely fine and dandy, just brush his teeth well before bed!

Do you have particular reasons to worry about a nut allergy? 1 year olds can have nuts, it's mainly that they are a choking risk whole.

milkysmum · 26/01/2022 22:07

Are you wanting to keep a eye on partner or child? - if no allergies he'll be fine!

Abridget7 · 26/01/2022 22:08

Unless he has a nut allergy, you are overreacting.

rattlemehearties · 26/01/2022 22:08

Should you keep an eye on who? Your partner? Sure, I don't think he should be giving good chocolate to your child when you could be eating it!

shygirliee56 · 26/01/2022 22:08

Well I don't know if he has allergies that's the thing my HV says to keep away from nuts and stuff until 2yrs at least

I don't know it, are the almonds whole? Is that the issue?

In the U.K.? I’ve got 3 young children and have never had that advice, mine ate things like peanut butter from around 9 months old.
Blueuggboots · 26/01/2022 22:10

He'll be fine. You're over reacting a bit. I mean that as kindly as possible!!!

SleepingStandingUp · 26/01/2022 22:10

you mean like Kinder Bueno or some posh stuff?
If its the kinder stuff, i wouldnt worry. i reaction is likely to have been pretty quick surely? if its posh stuff, make husband replace it

mynameiscalypso · 26/01/2022 22:10

Whole nuts are a choking hazard for a baby. The advice is to expose them to nut products early on though as there's evidence that reduces allergy risk - peanut/almond butter is a great way to do this.

tkwal · 26/01/2022 22:10

Slight over reaction I would say. Unless the child has an allergy or you had both agreed to raise them sugar free

Lockdownmummy · 26/01/2022 22:11

Outdated advice from your HV! NHS guidance is to introduce allergens from when you start weaning (one at a time!)

IrishMama2015 · 26/01/2022 22:12

Hi OP, Here in Ireland we are recommended to introduce nuts and other known allergens in small quantities as soon as babies are weaned after 6 months. There is no known benefit to delaying the introduction the these foods ❤️

Hercisback · 26/01/2022 22:12

Your HV is nuts.

Delaying exposure can make the likelihood of allergies increase.

Ohpulltheotherone · 26/01/2022 22:12

If your child had a nut allergy then you’d know about it pretty soon after he came into contact with them.

If he’s not showing any signs of allergic reaction then he’s likely fine.

I’ve personally never been told or heard of keeping young children away from nuts other than for choking reasons?

Perhaps have a look on legitimate websites for some guidance? Not saying HV is wrong, but worth checking to put your mind at ease

You definitely shouldn't do that - the earlier the exposure to nuts the less likelihood of allergies (or so I've read). My kids first foods included peanut butter. But back to your OP, yes you are completely over reacting.
Itsalmostanaccessory · 26/01/2022 22:13

So?

OpheliaHardon · 26/01/2022 22:14

OP, I have a child who's allergic to nuts, and there was absolutely no need to 'keep an eye' on him because there was no doubt about it. You would know about it if your son were allergic to almonds. Bear in mind that the huge majority of people don't have allergies, so unless you and your husband are allergic to nuts, it's not that likely that your son will be.

I thought your thread was going to be a complaint about your OH wasting good chocolate on a toddler...

OrisOnson · 26/01/2022 22:14

Very OTT

NuffSaidSam · 26/01/2022 22:14

Babies can have nut products (not whole nuts) from 6 months.

You've either misunderstood your health visitor or your health visitor is not up to date with current guidance.

Unless there are nut allergies in the family or your child has a condition that means allergies are more likely than normal?

LavenderBlue95 · 26/01/2022 22:14

I have been seeing an allergist for my DS for months. The advice your HV gave you is very outdated. Introducing allergens at an earlier age is suggested now. Children who aren’t introduced until later are actually more likely to develop an allergy. If he hasn’t had any nuts before just keep an eye on him but there’s really no need to worry :)

Fairylightsongs · 26/01/2022 22:15

Do you mean kinder bueno? Which is hazelnut flavoured centre? It’s fine,
