Massive overreaction. Just chill out.

Lovelydovey · 26/01/2022 22:17

@shygirliee56

Well I don't know if he has allergies that's the thing my HV says to keep away from nuts and stuff until 2yrs at least
As the mum of a DC with a nut allergy, that is bonkers advice. Early exposure is recommended to try and reduce the incidence of allergy. Choking is a different risk, though not an issue with bueno.

Unless there is a history of allergy or a reaction to the bueno, then start adding nuts to the diet now. If you’re concerned, give them with breakfast then you have all day to see if there is a reaction. And if you’re particularly worried, then have an antihistamine on standby.

JustWonderingIfYou · 26/01/2022 22:17

You are supposed to introduce allergens one at a time from weaning- 6months.

Delaying exposure can increase risk of allergies.

That's outdated advice. You need to give them nuts right off. Your 1 year old should be having nit butters etc as standard
shygirliee56 · 26/01/2022 22:19

Thank you guys for telling I can't believe my HV told me nonsense 😭

I did overreact a bit and I will definitely look on the NHS for the updated info

This is so silly. You will have much bigger things to worry about as a parent, believe me. I’m sorry to sound mean but it’s chocolate 🤷🏻‍♀️

Doublechocolatetiffin · 26/01/2022 22:20

As others have said, your HV is giving entirely incorrect advice. You should not delay exposure to nuts, I went to see one of the leading pediatric allergist a couple of weeks back as my youngest has cmpa and a possible peanut allergy. He was very clear that early exposure to nuts is key to preventing allergies in the future and told me to make sure I was giving her them now. Obviously whole nuts are a choking hazard, but do give him nut butters or milks to ensure that he has early exposure to them. Try them one at at time, ideally at breakfast or lunch so you can keep an eye out for any reactions.

madisonbridges · 26/01/2022 22:20

@SleepingStandingUp

you mean like Kinder Bueno or some posh stuff? If its the kinder stuff, i wouldnt worry. i reaction is likely to have been pretty quick surely? if its posh stuff, make husband replace it
😂😂😂😂 👌

WaterBottle123 · 26/01/2022 22:21

Yes you should definitely keep an eye on your partner, nicking the chocolate!

Your HV is a bit dim

toastfiend · 26/01/2022 22:22

I understand how anxiety inducing parenting young babies is, but, in the nicest possible way, you're really overreacting, OP.

My DS had peanut butter and almond butter from early on in the weaning process. As far as I remember smooth nut butters were recommended in lots of the baby-led weaning books. Unless your child has known allergies then I really would relax. I believe there's evidence to suggest that introducing children to these kinds of things at an earlier age means that they're less likely to develop allergies anyway. My DS was referred to the allergy clinic due to a reaction to some vitamins and they were very encouraging about my having given him things that are common allergens quite early on.

00100001 · 26/01/2022 22:22

NHS advice here

"You can give your baby nuts and peanuts from around 6 months old, as long as they're crushed, ground or a smooth nut or peanut butter."

Your hv is wrong. You can give ground nuts from 6 months old
sarahc336 · 26/01/2022 22:23

As a nut allergy mum trust me if he was allergic you'd know by now. You don't need to avoid nuts for 2 years btw ☺️ xx

addictedtotheflats · 26/01/2022 22:25

I wouldnt worry at all, unless like others have said they have allergies. I gave mine peanut butter at 6 more months

KurtWilde · 26/01/2022 22:32

HV said what? That's bonkers. It's best to introduce things such as eggs, nuts etc from 6 months (not whole nuts obviously!!). Mine had smooth peanut on toast at 6 months onwards.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 26/01/2022 22:35

Chocolate is poisonous for dogs - not children. As long as there were no whole almonds he could swallow you should be fine.

Lady1576 · 26/01/2022 22:36

Seriously! That’s the second but if totally shit, dangerously inaccurate advice from a HV in two days. How is this allowed to happen?? How is it that non-experts (normal mums) know so much more than someone supposed to advising us on health. WTAF!!

Lady1576 · 26/01/2022 22:36

Second bit of…. Sorry ranty rant.

User8721643839 · 26/01/2022 22:41

PFB by any chance??

saraclara · 26/01/2022 22:49

@Hercisback

Your HV is nuts.

Delaying exposure can make the likelihood of allergies increase.

Exactly. I'm shocked. That was advice I got 35 years ago when my DD was a baby. But the advice changed to the opposite some good while ago. The sooner a baby is introduced to allergens the better is what the research has shown.

So the HV couldn't be more wrong, and OP, you have absolutely no reason to freak out about this.

Sux2Buthen · 26/01/2022 22:57

Bet your baby loved it Grin

KitchenTowel · 26/01/2022 23:00

@shygirliee56

Well I don't know if he has allergies that's the thing my HV says to keep away from nuts and stuff until 2yrs at least
that advice is outdated. The recommendation now is to give kids (with no known allergy or who aren't at high rish to have an allergy) nuts before they turn one to prevent allergies. What's more important is to grind or finely chop up huts as they are a choking hazard

Is ds likely vyo have an allergy to almonds? If not you can relax. Beside I think s vere allergic reactions happen pretty fast so you would have known by now

mummabubs · 26/01/2022 23:17

@Lockdownmummy

Outdated advice from your HV! NHS guidance is to introduce allergens from when you start weaning (one at a time!)
This! I have a four year old and an 8 month old, both introduced to nuts whilst weaning at 6 months. Old advice was to wait, but research suggested that kids were actually more likely to develop a nut allergy if exposed to them later. Plus the amount of nut in a kinder bueno is miniscule :)
mugglenutmeg · 27/01/2022 06:51

How dare your partner not share the chocolate with you instead! Definitely keep an eye on him for future signs of selfishness!Grin
