If you knew it was likely you were going to be ill

The dreaded stomach bug hit our house Sunday afternoon. First taking down 22 month old DD, today has been her worst day, she's been so lethargic. I've spoken to the doctor so now we're riding it out.

It hit DH today too, he's pretty useless right now as he's so ill. So I'm nervous it's coming for me next 😂. If you knew you were going to be ill, what would you do to prepare?

So far I've put the washer and dishwasher on in the hopes that will see us through, taken the bins out and had a quick tidy, we had our shopping delivered yesterday so all good on that front. My DF is coming up to walk our dog for us as I can't leave DD with DH right now to do it.

Also any tips for surviving with a toddler if me and DH are wiped out at the same time? 😬

Get some grab and go food in for those that can / need to eat. Microwave meals, snacks, fruit bags, fruit purees, rice bags, fruit shoots, anything you / DH can stuff down the toddler when the time comes.

Make sure towels and clean sheets ready and accessible! Do you have plenty of snacks to chuck at toddler? Now is the time for spaghetti hoops, yoghurt pouches and pom bears!

Probably too late now but DH managed to avoid catching it as I made him use a different toilet to me the minute I started with symptoms and bleached the heck out of everything. And I basically shut myself away in another room while he looked after DD, who had largely recovered by then, so hopefully you'll get lucky too!

When we got it what helped was:
-Flat lucozade or dioralyte to keep hydrated
-can of chicken soup to heat up and had it with a bit of rice to help with the empty stomach feeling when throwing up eases
-smartphone/tablet/tv to entertain toddler (youtube kids, cbebees, toddler app games) when you can't even lift your head from the pillow- yes yes devices are evil but desperate times and all that!

Is a D&V bug? If so that’s what’s making me feel like death barely warmed up. DD was throwing up on Saturday, bad tummy but better since and I had V in the night and D this morning. I ache all over, skin is tender and sore and I’ve slept nearly all day.

If it’s coming for you I’d gently just prepare for death. Haven’t felt this rough for years.

LunaNova · 25/01/2022 19:05

It is the D&V bug @AnneLovesGilbert and based on my DH right now I think you might have hit the nail on the head with the gently preparing for death 😬

Thanks for all your suggestions, definitely some things i hadn't thought of!

Towels and sheets are a great idea, they're all clean but I might put them somewhere more easy to get to in the middle of the night, we had a 5am sickness event last night so trying to be as prepared as possible being the last one standing!

I'm going to sleep in our spare room tonight so DH will have exclusive use of our en suite but I fear I'll be lucky to miss it as DD has been attached to me since she got I'll on Sunday.

Order some cheap but exciting g new indoor activities for the toddler. By the time you go down she’ll have recovered and be desperate to do all the things. Some new paint sticks/playdoh/stickers she can sit at the table with while you die quietly will help.

AnneLovesGilbert · 25/01/2022 19:30

Thoughts and prayers OP, genuinely.

If you get sick on a mattress, 1 part water 3 parts white vinegar blotted over it once the sick is dry is a winner. Smell completely gone. Have since bought a waterproof sheet for her bed. She’s literally never been sick since she was 6 months when she used to bring up a bit of milk. She’s nearly 3 and wasn’t impressed by the experiences.

I don’t know anyone who’s got this so was very naive.

Wishing you ongoing health and DH a swift recovery.
