Baby Congestion

My DS is 7 weeks old today. From he was about 4 days old we've had to use saline spray and nose drops on him as he seems very congested. I've mentioned this to the HV and GP and I feel like I'm being fobbed off. To begin with it was that he was born via C Section, then it was the time of year cos he was a December baby and now it's just 'babies are snuffly'.

Surely it can't be normal that every single day I'm using nasal drops on him and a nasal aspirator? He wakes up sometimes screaming and when I give him drops and clear his nose he's fine. We thought it was maybe the air in the house with the heating being on so bought a humidifier which hasn't done anything. I literally can't leave the house without nasal drops and his aspirator anymore.

I'm currently sitting up with him as I'm afraid to sleep, every time I lie him on his back he's gagging and starts to cough. He has thick bubbly saliva in his mouth that he has tried to cough up and can't. I've tried clearing his nose and he still sounds congested. When I put my hand on his back and he breathes in I can feel his chest crackle too. It's as though he's full of mucus - this bit isn't constant but has happened before.

Surely this is not normal? The GP said just to use drops as often as I want but that's not getting to what's causing this. I'm also worried that using the aspirator will hurt the inside of his nose when it's used every single day

My DD was like this, turned out to be reflux. Does he have any other symptoms of reflux?

Kudupoo · 25/01/2022 06:12

Reflux/laryngomalacia?

He's on omeprazole for reflux. Does he need this upped or something else?

My baby had this and it turned out to be a cow milk protein allergy. Within days of changing formula the congestion cleared up

My toddler was a hugely snuffly baby. Now gets really bad hay-fever/ eczema. Not sure if the two are related! But yes, we were constantly clearing his nose when he was a newborn.

My baby was like this at 6 weeks, I used snufflebabe on the soles of his feet. Worked great.

Hi @happypineapples
Did you find what was the cause of your sons congestion or find anything that has worked?!
My son is 17 weeks old and has had constant nasal congestion since birth. Again I was told it was because he was born via csection and then apparently he's had 2 viral infections so they put it down to that. We've tried prescription milk (dairy free) but it didn't help. He's also got swollen lymph nodes which he's had from being around 2 weeks old. GP says that's normal apparently. Not sure what else to try/where to go to next!

I tried everything, humidifier in the room, prescription milk - nothing worked, he grew out of it. He's 11 months now and I actually forgot about how congested he used to be until I seen this thread again. Sorry I can't be of any help, nothing I tried worked. I just used saline spray/drops daily. Hope it clears up for you!

@Natalie3387 have you tried the calpol plug ins? They work great when my LO is poorly and stuffy.
