Hi everyone, my baby has been given sma alfamino for suspected cows protein allergy and he hates his milk and I’m 100% convinced he has it, he hates the new milk so much I barely get 20oz down him a day and he should be having 30oz, I’ve tried contacting health visitors and doctors and they just tell me to keep offering the milk and see how it goes and not offering any real help, I’m concerned he’s losing weight but no one will help me, I’m so stressed and upset, he’s only on the 25th centile as it is so he’s not big. I don’t really know what I’m even expecting from this post tbh, maybe some insight into what your child with cmpa were like, maybe any ideas as to how to get him to drink his milk, anything really. He’s only 16 weeks old and I’ve been told my a paediatrician at A&E I can wean at 18 weeks if I’d like but I thought you couldn’t until 6 months and if you did you needed to do it under the care of a healthcare professional but that’s all she said and sent me on my way. So sorry for the long post but any advice, opinions, experiences would be helpful. TIA

Hi OP! My baby girl has been suggested as having CMPA since November last year, we've got an appointment with a dietitian in February to discuss options in regards to weaning (she's now 6.5 months so we have actually already started weaning!).

Her symptoms were:

  • Green, mucusy poops that had a cheesy smell (sorry pretty grim!!)
  • silent reflux since birth
  • congested after feeds

We tried lots of other things and medications which had no affect, which led our GP to suggest CMPA. Like you I wasn't entirely convinced as she had had a cold, been teething etc. which all have similar symptoms! But since weaning we have challenged the dairy in her diet and she definitely has reacted to it so would assume she is allergic.

I'm sorry you've been left a little in the dark with this, it's a big thing to say your child is allergic to without much support! Can you seek a referral via your GP for a dietitian? In the mean time, I posted a similar thing on Mumsnet and was directed to this Facebook group: m.facebook.com/groups/CMPASforBreastFeeding/?ref=share

They have been nothing short of amazing and I use it daily for information and support! I really would recommend joining and posting on there too.

My baby is EBF but I've seen loads of Mums on there commenting on the dairy free formulas with tips and tricks to getting baby to drink it (loads swear by adding vanilla essence!?) so worth a look!

Hope this helps! Flowers Xx
