First hair cut

What age did your DCs get their first hair cuts?

DS is 14m and has a wild mop of hair - it’s starting to bother him now it gets in his eyes and it’s ticking his ears so the first cut is upon us 😬 why do I feel like an emotional wreck over it?! 🙈🤣 Also a bit concerned that there’s absolutely not a chance he’s going to sit still that long 🙈 any tips? Lots of snack I’m assuming?!

Around 18 months, but that was because hairdressers were shut until then and I didn't fancy attempting it myself! To be honest he cried throughout and it was a bit traumatic, but he's fine with it now age 3. We went somewhere with car seats for children and kids TV on, which helped when he wasn't crying.

Maybe tie it back if you'd rather not cut it?

YalaYalaDingDong · 15/01/2022 19:31

DS was 3 months when he had his first haircut. I think I was the same age...we've got some unreal hair genes!
I've found putting YouTube on when he's getting his hair cut does help and he sits beautifully now.

I cut it around 10 months in the lockdown as it was getting so long. I'm not going to lie I did a terrible job! Luckily it grew again quickly Grin. Easier to do it as they are distracted - food or playing.

Oh and he absolutely will not sit in a barbers chair; so we now have a mobile hairdresser come to the house

@TulipsGarden Aww cute!! I’ve seen places with those wee car chairs etc but we have nothing like that anywhere near us unfortunately!

@AlwaysLatte it’s not really that I’d rather not cut it 🤷🏻‍♀️ I guess it’s just one of those things that makes him seem like a big boy now 😅 it definitely needs a cut, I’d rather he was comfortable and it wasn’t annoying him 😊

DGD1 had her first cut at 4 years.....DGD2 is now 3 and has not yet had a hair cut ( her hair is now down her back).....my DD says she will get it trimmed before she starts school in 18 months

Bobholll · 15/01/2022 19:49

My eldest - 9 months. She was born with a mop of hair & it was shoulder length by 9 months! After that, we went regularly maybe every 4/5 months for a trim. And similarly now really (she’s 4).

DD2 - 12 months. She has entirely different hair, much slower growing but it was in her eyes & growing at odd lengths. Went for a tidy up & it’s growing much more neatly now!

Never had a problem with either of them at the hairdressers, probably because they’ve been going since babies! I take a bag of chocolate buttons/magic stars/animal biscuits and a box of raisins. I appreciate that’s a sugar hit but it’s a one off! I also put CBeebies on my phone if needed. DD1 liked to watch something but DD2 isn’t fussed so long as she’s eating 😂 I take them to my hairdressers and they are brilliant with them both, my eldest LOVES going now. She chats away about school & gets French plaits done by one of the trainees and it makes her week!

My DS had his first hair cut at 12 months. Like you I thought it would be a disaster and he wouldn't sit still, but to my surprise he was so GOOD. He was so interested in looking at was going on and when he did start getting a little fidgety I have him a snack and he sat there happily.

He might surprise you!

I trimmed all ours to keep it out of their eyes the 1st 2 years then took them for a cut at the hairdressers. They all sat very well, loved looking at themselves in the mirror.
Our hairdresser changed career a few years back so now I cut all their hair myself. DS is awaiting ASD assesment and is very fussy about having his hair cut so it's a bit easier for him if I'm doing it anyway.

About 10 months I think. DC1 hated it from the first second. Screamed at the sight of scissors. Still a bit difficult about it, and having his nails cut at nearly 6 but getting better.

DC2 loved it and sat really still straightaway. Growing hers again now as it will be easier to tir back for school when long but she happily let me cut it from nearly bum length to just below her ears in the summer.

My DS was about 18 months...i maybe should've done it a bit before but i just couldn't bring myself to do it! I felt a bit emotional but he was totally fine - sat on my knee with his dummy and wasn't fussed at all!
