Small baby born at 0.4 centile - growth question

Hi everyone,

A bit of a background. My DD was born small with low birth weight at 36 weeks due to placenta issues, blood preassue, blood flow etc.
Baby's weight was dropping from 50th centile to 3rd centile within weeks during pregnancy so the consultant decided baby needs to come out at week 36.

We are both tall with my hubby and most of our family is tall. Im currently breastfeeding.

If you were in a similar situation, did your baby put on weight and caught up with the peers?

No we introduced solids at 6 months and she never needed a special formula as she followed her centile. They didn't find a reason for her IUGR, they think it was because my placenta was small. She is still small but so are we :)

Hiya, my LO was born on 2nd centile. Had growth scans weekly 34 weeks onwards as my fundal height measurements had been reducing. I was allowed to wait to go to term as although the growth has reduced there was still growth nonetheless.

Born on 2nd centile and now at 15 months Is just under 50th. I’m average sized and husband v tall. Oh and he was ebf xxx

Not exactly the same but my 90th baby dropped to 25th and stayed there for well over 18 months, has levelled off at 50th aged 4. breastfed until 3yo. If they are healthy and eating well and maintaining weoght gain then carry on as you are. Food wise, fed a healthy diet of meals and extras if they ask. Just make sure baby is growing and eating well.

I got so stressed about weight and so did so many other new mums. I think my advice is carry on with getting weighed, of course, but think higher picture...does my child look healthy? Are they going through the sizes? Are their stools healthy? Are they hitting milestone? Are they happy?

I had an iugr baby. She was around the 30th centile but had dropped to the 0.4th by 28 weeks and her growth was under what was expected thereafter - for the same reasons you mention. They got her out at 34 weeks. After a few weeks figuring out feeding issues, jaundice, etc, she ended up back on the 30th centile and tracked that for as long as we were monitoring her. She's now 7 and I haven't weighed her in a long while. She's one of the smallest in her class but not the smallest so is probably still around the 30th centile among her peers. My husband is pretty slight so I guess she takes after him and that is her natural level.

No high calorie food. We weaned in accordance with actual age rather than age adjusted for prematurity.

Yes she caught up very quickly, almost as if the high blood pressure artificially slowed her. 25th percentile at 3 months, 50th at 6 months and 75th at 9 months where she’s stayed - now 2.5. My second was similar, although she wasn’t as small at birth (3rd centile).
