Strategies for solo bedtime with toddler and newborn.

The other night I had a tricky bedtime with my son who is 2.5. I cuddle/rock him for 5 mins before putting him in his cot (awake). Usually he's ok and falls asleep. The other night, he cried everytime I put him in the cot...which resulted in an hour of cuddles, crying in the cot, me going back in every 10 mins etc and repeat.
How am I meant to do that with a newborn arriving soon?! The newborn would probably be in another room I assume whilst I put toddler to bed and I guess crying whilst this is happening too! I'm reluctant to move to big bed as he hasn't tried to climb out ever yet and generally sleep well.

I'm just thinking you'll end up buying two cots and then shortly after splashing out on a second cot you'll end up buying a bed. At 2.5 I had a 3 month old and sleep went to pants for my 2.5 year old about six weeks after he was put in his big boy bed at 2 years and 7 months. He also decided he wanted to stay dry at night so would wake me to go on his potty. We got a stairgate so he didn't keep appearing upstairs and went down and laid down on his bed with him at night until he settled. We also left him to tantrum sometimes too. 🤷‍♀️ Hes 4 now and still appears in my bedroom at night for various reasons. Goes through phases. You just have to bear with it.

We sleep trained prior to our second arriving. We did gradual retreat so DS would go to sleep by himself without needing one of us there.

I used to do bedtime on my double bed with the toddler lying one side of me and baby the other.

I'd read a story and then we'd all lie down. Toddler would then be moved to her own bed once asleep. Baby co slept with me.

At 2.5 years your toddler is ok for a proper bed now.

Mine never climbed out their cots but moved to toddler beds all the same. It was fine and so much easier to put them to bed as you can lie with them. And also bring baby with you as and when needed.
