Warm/winter trousers for toddlers

Hi mums,

What do your little ones wear in winter for the bottom half? I have troubles getting any warm trousers for my 15 month old boy, who just started to walk.

He wears a warm jacket to go to the nursery and just normal trousers. All the shops only sell warm jacks but not trousers for this age, and all in one is too heavy and fiddly to put on. When we go out he normally stays in the buggy with footmuff on to keep warm. But the nursery was saying that they’re getting the kids to play in the garden starting from this week, so I’m lost how to dress him.

It’s only 5 degrees outside today, so I don’t know why they have to go to the garden in weathers like this. Maybe I’m just too worried of him being cold.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

2 year old DS wears a snowsuit, wellies and hat to play in the garden at nursery, they play out in all weather except very wet and he's warm enough.

My two have worn jeans a lot over winter. I found they're only troublesome when potty training.

I also got fleece lined all in one puddle suits for nursery etc. nice and warm and waterproof

Definitely agree with PP about an all in one for nursery (bonus of being waterproof too). The nursery we use have them out year round starting from baby room so very useful. Could always get a lined puddlesuit rather than a snowsuit if you don’t want him looking too much like Michelin man

Re trousers though, H&M do some lined cord trousers which are good at keeping legs warm. Or double layer and have him with some tights on underneath his trousers

We wear these leggings fro Lindex most of the time, they're fluffy ish on the inside.

H&m do lined cords too

I used to put tights under joggers. Only a problem when they’re potty training.

Pucarbuile · 10/01/2022 12:59

Tights all the way

Caspianberg · 10/01/2022 14:59

Mine wears thick leggings and then waterproof salopettes outside in winter. I prefer to all in one as can take coat off and just wear thick jumper and salopettes if sun comes out.

We also have thin rain suit trouser things for spring onwards when it’s warmer but wet

Danikm151 · 10/01/2022 15:01

Joggers ftw
Thicker and keeps kid toasty

MonkeyPuddle · 10/01/2022 15:04

I’ve dressed both of mine in joggers. DS’s nursery used to pop them in waterproofs for being in the garden, looked like the ones fishermen wear!

Have a look at these if you spend lots of time outside

They are very warm and cosy

Thanks so much everyone for the advice!

We bought a few jogger and top sets from Morrisons' Nutmeg range, where the tops are just standard (thin-ish) long sleeves tshirts, but the joggers are really thick and fleecy lined on the inside. It was unintentional at the time, but I've since been back and bought more sets for the winter.

Keep an eye out on Lidl and Aldi's offers. All toddlers in Germany own a pair (often two, one for nursery) of waterproof dungarees which are really practical to get on and off and very warm.

This kind of thing. Lidl and Aldi sell them for about £8.

Second the advice on H&M lined cords! Our daughter is 13 months and in a forest school type nursery, so we have a fleece lined puddlesuit from hippychick in there for really wet days and H&M lined cords in every colour for other days and she's always toasty warm. I've even bought them in the next 2 sizes up so she can keep wearing them all year when it's cold (is rarely gets about 20 degrees here)

Panda2020 · 11/01/2022 16:04

Thanks! The Forest school type nursery sounds really cool 😄 I bet she’s having a great time there!

It looks like Decathlon might also have the dungaree type ones. I can't think of any other shop in the UK that has German style stock. Maybe H&M would do them as well.
