DD has been horrid all day today and I'm about to lose it! I was just in the middle of tidying the room up and she was being not very helpful to say the least. I had already told her to take her dummy out because I couldnt understand her with it in - when i heard her say something to me - i took her dummy away and made her repeat it - it was "What you tidying up for sweetheart?" What I heard was "What you tidying up for silly tart?"!!!!

Oh dear! How old?
If it's any consolation, I've had a running battle with my dd over tidying up since 4.30pm today. She has only just stopped screaming about it. I even had to resort to the binliner trick and that still didn't have any affect. Kids eh,

The things kids say.... or the things mums hear
So are there any toys in the bin liner ???

Cadbury · 16/11/2004 19:09

No, her dad got home just as I was about to start packing them in there and he difused the situation and got her to put them away ffs.
Why does it work for him and not for me. I've had to put up with her fowl mood and screaming fits all bloody day and he walzes in there and gets her to do anything he wants just like that.

she's 2.11 and she's just horrid at the moment. Today we went to the supermarket. She grabbed a shopping basket and ran off. When I caught up with her she had filled it!! Then tonight while I was tidying she started throwing pens on the floor. I turned the tv off and told her I would count to three and if she hadn't picked them up she could go up to her room. I started "One...." she looked at me and said "two...." I give up!!!! I've lost control!!!

Did you take her to her room though ???
We need to be consistent otherwise they don't believe it... I am saying this to you as much as to myself !

not that time although i did send her when she started throwing the sofa cushions on the floor - i snapped!! She sat at the top of the stairs crying "I'm sorry mummy" Its soooo bloody frustrating!!

I am not quite yet a mum so don't have any experience, but a friend of mine seems to have quite a good think worked out with her 2 1/2 year old. She will give her 2 choices such as 'pick up your pens nicely and keep playing or leave them on the floor and go to your room'. Giving 2 choices seems to be as much as the child can process at one time so usually choses the more favourable option. I guess it could take some time to make this work but if you stick to the choices oyu give the child it could help.
Let me know, if it works for you i will try it in the future with mine!

Cadbury, I know what you mean about Dad diffusing the situation. Yesterday my dd had been really foul since waking up from her afternoon snooze - grumpy and clingy - she kept telling me she didn't feel very well so of couse I started panicing about what was wrong - it turned out to be a little tiny splinter on her finger but she wouldn't let me touch it! She finally calmed down and we were sitting on the sofa just getting engrossed in a book when in walks Daddy and she's all sweetness and light and he gets to look at her finger and is evan allowed to squeeze the splinter out! - ahhhhhh! Then she tells him that I had been grumpy!!!! We are also going though a not helping to tidy up stage and 'No' - I don't like it/ want to' is having a comeback. I told her the other day that if she didn't like her toys any more that I would pack them up and give them to somebody who would like them! It worked that time but not sure if it will again!
