How often should a 12 month old be breastfed during the day?

I know breastfeeding is on demand, but some kids want the boob constantly. How often should a child of this age be feeding during the day?

Also, will reducing breastfeeds lead to an increase in their solid intake.

It's up to you and your child. Feeding less milk may lead to an increase in eating solid foods

I wasn't breastfeeding on demand at all at that age. At 1 ds had 4 breastfeeds per day at set times and I think we were just starting night weaning too.

There is no right or wrong. Once a day? It’s really up to you.

On demand. Milk continues to be the primary source of nutrition until 1 year so at that stage I'd still be doing on demand and just offering lots of other foods.

If I remember right at age 1 DD was feeding about 4 times a day. Immediately after waking up, twice in the day before her naps and then just before going to bed. By 16 months we were down to 2 bf a day and then very quickly in the next two months one bf and then none.

I thought of reducing bf at one year old but she was refusing solids for a few months so I thought I need to bf her to get some nutrition into her (though maybe she wasn't so keen on solids because she got enough from the breastfeeding.)

My 11 month old has no feeds in the day but plenty at night Hmm

Santaisstilleatingmincepies · 06/01/2022 20:21

First and last thing only. Dd's choice.. Slept right through after her last feed.. And weetabix!

squirrelnutkins1 · 06/01/2022 20:24

3 times a day for mine at that age reducing down to morning and night over the next couple of months.
She likes more when she's not feeling well though.
You do what you feel tho x

Breast milk is not a complete food after 6 months. A 12 month old should be having 3/4 solid meals a day for dental development and iron requirements. I'd say more than 4 long breastfeed would interfere with appetite for solids. Also vitamin D deficiency can become a problem.

Onemorebaby · 06/01/2022 20:38

Mine has around 4 but can be up to 8 when he's poorly, which he has been a lot recently. He has a great appetite so it's not interfering and sometimes it feels like it's more for comfort. Food feels like his main source of nutrition

There is no "should". Whatever suits you and your child. My daughter is 21 months and still feeds at least 3 times a day, other kids stop entirely at 12 months. Do you have a problem with how many feeds they have during the day, if so you can do something about it. If you and your child are both happy with the current arrangement, carry on.
