Toddler sleep pattern

Morning everyone,

Really hoping you can give me some advice. My 2 year old has always been a good sleeper, but always an early ish riser. He’s always been up by 6/6.30 but now he’s up at 4.30/5am. He has 1 nap during the day for around 1.5 hours and he goes to bed by 7pm. The early start started weeks ago but now he’s learnt to climb his cot and is in his toddler bed it’s worse. Can anyone advise, is he getting too much sleep? Not enough? One article says he’s overtired the next says he’s getting too much and drop his nap which I know he won’t cope without.

He probably is getting ready to drop his nap. You could either reduce it down to 45 minutes (so one sleep cycle), drop it or push bedtime later.

This is probably not what you want to hear but I think this is a phase that most toddlers go through as their sleep needs change. The vast majority of the parents I have spoken to have experienced this - myself included.
I spent ages trying various different options ensuring that I tried each for at least two weeks to ensure there was sufficient time for any changes to take effect. Ultimately, I think they just grow out of it. Hopefully it is short lived for you.

By 2, is he just turned 2, 2.5 or closer to 3?

Thank you, we are going to try a shorter nap.

We did also think this, he’s 2 this week and perhaps his pattern is changing. But we did think the same as what you’ve said whatever we trial needs to be consistent. We’re all very tired! Lol
