Your best dog and toddler friendly living room rugs?

december2020 · 02/01/2022 16:48

Our house is open plan and there are no doors to shut and contain the living room away from dirty paws and general toddler grub.

So please please give me your best recommendations of rugs that can take a beating with grime but still look remotely presentable after a good vacuum.

Or any solutions at all?

Currently we have a splash mat down to try minimise the damage but the rug is pretty shabby looking and run down.

It doesn't look good (in the slightest!) But this IKEA rug goes in both the washing machine and tumble dryer www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/tiphede-rug-flatwoven-natural-black-40456757/

No dog here but a very messy toddler, we gave up with rugs and got a totter and tumble play mat and it was been amazing! Wipes clean and looks good. Don’t see why it wouldn’t work with a dog as well.

Ooo thank you both!
Will check the IKEA rug out.
We have a Totter and Tumble upstairs but it didn't occur to me to potentially use one as a makeshift rug! Will definitely look into that too!

Do you think a low pile rug with a print may be able to hide muck better? Or wool? Or am I just wasting money even considering that?

Have a look at some of the Wayfair indoor/outdoor rugs

Sorry I meant La Redoute not wayfair!

Hi OP similar set up as you and also have our front door which comes straight into out living room (no hall way). We’ve just bought this rug from IKEA www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/vindum-rug-high-pile-blue-green-20344983/#content and I love it, thick pile for baby to play on and multicoloured so doesn’t show the dirt

Hi OP :)

We use the Dr Beckman Pet Cleaner on our rug. It even has a brush attatched to it. Squirt it on, scrub it and leave to dry. Works well for us :)

I think the shaggy rugs hide a multitude of sins.
I could probably put together a meal from mine at a push.

Ah amazing! Going to check these out!
Though I think our rug is beyond saving by the miracle worker that is Dr. Beckman Blush

Looking at reviews it looks like our rug has been discontinued and the last review saying it really doesn't wear well and they had to replace the rug after 6 months as it looked so dishevelled- so hopefully it means our house isn't a total daily pig sty!

Has anyone found wool rugs to resist dirt better? Or tried a washable Ruggable rug? Seriously considering those options as well.

@december2020 You didn't see the state of our rug! Though a new hoover also helped. We bought a pet hoover the other day and the amount of dirt it sucked up from HALF of the rug was embarrassing to say the least! :D
