Never - good to never get in the habit. I don’t add salt to adults food either.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 31/12/2021 20:47

When they ate the same meals as us consistently. So prob 2/3 yrs old.

Also adding salt when cooking your food is absolutely fine. It's all the salt we consume in processed food that is bad as we have no actual idea of the amounts we accumulate that way.

Can't imagine never using a good rock salt when making a spag bol or any other dinner from scratch. How tasteless!

RussianSpy101 · 31/12/2021 20:47

Never. Eldest is 7. I rarely add it to mine and DHs meals either.

Never. Confused

We don’t use salt in anything Blush

SalveVagina · 31/12/2021 20:48

PFB - when he was about 21. Others: can't remember, but possibly from birth.

thebigpurpleone · 31/12/2021 20:48

Why would you?

MamaWeasel · 31/12/2021 20:48

Never. Now grown ups, they only have salt on chips I think.

tallywag · 31/12/2021 20:48

Never. Don't have it in the house now - but I was brought up with bucketloads of salt in pretty much everything. How times change!

mynameiscalypso · 31/12/2021 20:49

I don't add salt if I'm cooking just for DS (but I won't be stingy with salt containing ingredients either like cheese or bread). I season as normally if I'm cooking something for all of us (which is only once a week or so).

Lacedwithgrace · 31/12/2021 20:49

From maybe 2? When she would eat our meals. We don't use a lot of salt but do use a lot of other seasonings. I don't worry about salt content of food as she eats a balanced diet.

Bunnyfuller · 31/12/2021 20:49

Never

ohidoliketobe · 31/12/2021 20:50

Not necessarily "adding salt", but being less aware of using zero salt stock and beans etc about 2.5/ 3 years old

DigitalGhost · 31/12/2021 20:52

Never and never will. My mum never did either

BendingSpoons · 31/12/2021 20:53

The people saying never, do you cook from scratch? Or mean not adding it to pre-made food at the table. As a PP mentioned, I can't imagine making a spag bol with tinned tomatoes with no salt. So I have added a bit from when they shared our food (around 1 probably). Adults can add more to their plates if needed, but try not to add too much. I wouldn't let them add salt to chips etc yet (oldest 5) although they eat ketchup which is probably worse.

GoodnightGrandma · 31/12/2021 20:54

Never. The only food I put salt on is the chips I occasionally have.

Agree completely. Wonder how many of the above posters buy jars of pasta sauce etc. If you cook most things from scratch, including your bread, you don't need to worry about a little salt to season your food - it's nothing compared to what is in processed foods.
Jojobees · 31/12/2021 20:56

Same as a pp, I never add salt to cooking but from about 2 I stopped buying zero/low salt stock/gravy granules etc.

DigitalGhost · 31/12/2021 20:57

I cook from scratch everyday and I've never added salt it would be all I'd be able to taste.
My husband adds it to curry like a Savage

Ohshitiveturnedintomymother · 31/12/2021 20:58

From about 3, now they eat what we eat consistently. I wouldn’t add salt to their cooking if I were just making food for them, but there is no way I’m eating food that isn’t seasoned.

I’m always baffled when people boat about never using salt in cooking and think it must taste awful. Salt, acid, fat, heat are crucial for good food.

Savingpeoplehuntingthings · 31/12/2021 20:58

Don't use it in cooking or at the table, occasionally have it on chips. Ds has recently started putting a bit on his too, he's 12. It's not a regular thing though, maybe once a month or so.

Hollyhead · 31/12/2021 20:59

I don’t add salt to food anyway but I switched from zero salt stick cubes for cooking at 1 when they’re allowed 2g per day. It’s one of those issues lots of people are over cautious with in my opinion. I kept track of overall content in their diets and even without being cautious from 1yo it never went over the 2g per day - they eat such small quantities.

You need salt to bring out the flavours of spices or it will be bland
Comefromaway · 31/12/2021 21:00

I stopped adding salt in cooking when dd was born and never started again.

Ds now has to follow a very low salt diet for medical reasons so can have very little convenience food.

Notbluepeter · 31/12/2021 21:03

He was 2 before I stopped portioning out my DSs portion before adding non baby friendly things (salt/sugar/chillies etc)
But salt lifts every dish. How can people cook without it at all?! I don't think i've ever come across a recipe that doesn't include seasoning.

metalkprettyoneday · 31/12/2021 21:03

Do you mean when cooking?
If so, then I would have made spaghetti bolognese , casseroles when she was about 2 or younger ,

If you mean extra salt at the table then never -no reason to. I know some people like extra salty food but it would be like adding extra sugar to drinks.
