Never. I don't add salt to any of the food I cook for my family...dh has high blood pressure and I see no need for kids to have it. I unfortunately have a taste for salt so add it just to my portion after its been served.

Comefromaway · 31/12/2021 21:18

No I don’t.

3cats4poniesandababy · 31/12/2021 21:18

Never/now. I was never brought up with it. Like yes a bit but nothing compared to most. unless it is a boiled egg and then I am salt fiend tor some reason.

Salt 'increases' flavour, but another
Option is to just add more of the spices/herbs being used. Also most people add far more than is needed thought.

I add salt to things from scratch and of course chips !!

janicewheeler · 31/12/2021 21:19

Also boiled egg 😋

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 31/12/2021 21:19

I always put salt in pasta and potato water. Don't add salt to anything else.

Puremule · 31/12/2021 21:19

Never used salt myself so never used it for the kids. They are teenagers now and still don’t use it. My parents were salt fiends though.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 31/12/2021 21:20

@Comefromaway

You salt pasta?
You don't?!?
Peppaismyrolemodel · 31/12/2021 21:22

Have a friend who never added salt to kids food (junior). All v fatigued. Had blood done- lack of salt 😂🤷‍♀️
I think we need some!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 31/12/2021 21:23

@Comefromaway

You salt pasta?
Pinch of salt into the boiling water is standard surely?
BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 31/12/2021 21:24

Salt on melted cheese on toast is a fucking dream.

You need salt to bring out the flavours of spices or it will be bland

I think you’ve turned into my mother.

I don’t cook with salt. As with most things once you adjust you find food isn’t in the least bland without salt. I go home to my mum’s cooking and it all tastes really salty- it doesn’t bring out the flavours, it masks them.

I’ve never used salt since I moved out of home, as I prefer the flavours without. With the kids I was a little more aware when using convenience foods, then just cracked on as normal once they were 1.

Clymene · 31/12/2021 21:26

Salt increases the boiling point of water meaning that your pasta will be less soggy

Comefromaway · 31/12/2021 21:27

No, I’ve never put salt into pasta water.

Haudyourwheesht · 31/12/2021 21:28

Salt is essential for a functioning human body. I don't add it to my food at the table but always add it when cooking from scratch. Do people not add salt to soup? Bolognese? Casseroles? Potatoes?

CouldThisReallyBe · 31/12/2021 21:29

@thebigpurpleone

Why would you?
This!!!
NoNameHere12 · 31/12/2021 21:29

Before children, always, no our eldest is 12 and not us salt since, you get used to it and can actually taste food-so never

Andtheyalllookjustthesame · 31/12/2021 21:30

I didn't know I was meant to limit salt. I just cooked for my kids as normal. I don't use much salt anyway, a pinch with tomatoes or in the water when cooking pasta, the occasional stock cube, and salted butter and other salt containing foods like cheese. I only found out when my youngest was 2yrs old. Don't know how I missed it

Comefromaway · 31/12/2021 21:30

Soup - no
Bolognese - no
Casseroles - No but I use low salt stock
Potatoes - No

We eat bread with most of those meals which will contain some salt.

mynameiscalypso · 31/12/2021 21:31

I always add a pinch of salt when I'm baking too, especially brownies or chocolate chip cookies. It mellows out the bitterness you can get from cocoa and makes the chocolate taste richer (without tasting salty).

Comedycook · 31/12/2021 21:31

I understand we need some salt but I assume that there's loads of salt in processed food...I try not to give my dc loads of that but they eat standard shop bought bread, crisps, ketchup, baked beans, oven chips, breaded chicken etc.

GalacticGoddess · 31/12/2021 21:32

I will probably start when she consistently eats the same as us, around 2/3 most likely. I use Kallo low salt cubes currently to batch cook.

I have an ex-friend that uses no salt, she made me a 'curry' once. It was literally tinned tomatoes zero flavour, even though she used spices. Salt enhances, you don't have to use tons, just a nice quality rock salt and very little, but it does make a difference.

Viviennemary · 31/12/2021 21:32

Never. Dont add salt to food. It is not necessary.

notagainnotagain · 31/12/2021 21:33

Salt on the table for those who want it.

I don't add salt when cooking, except when baking bread. However our home baked bread has a lot less salt than most recipes call for.
