Never - I can’t see why I would add salt

NannyR · 31/12/2021 21:04

I add it in small amounts to some food cooked from scratch from about two years. It does improve the flavour of food - things like mash potatoes and scrambled eggs taste much nicer when seasoned well.

EverNapping · 31/12/2021 21:05

We don't use any salt, not in pre-made food or things cooked from scratch.

I cook from scratch most of the time and hardly ever use salt. Just seems unnecessary in most dishes.

Ohshitiveturnedintomymother · 31/12/2021 21:06

@metalkprettyoneday

Do you mean when cooking? If so, then I would have made spaghetti bolognese , casseroles when she was about 2 or younger ,

If you mean extra salt at the table then never -no reason to. I know some people like extra salty food but it would be like adding extra sugar to drinks.

I think this is the crux, what do people mean by ‘adding salt’
Santahatesbraisedcabbage · 31/12/2021 21:06

Ds7 prob has chips less than once a week and has started asking for salt on. Once quick grind and that's all!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 31/12/2021 21:07

We don't add salt at the table, but if I make spag bol / risotto etc I add it as part of the general seasonings. How can anyone cook a steak and not add salt to it before cooking?!

Comefromaway · 31/12/2021 21:09

@Notbluepeter

He was 2 before I stopped portioning out my DSs portion before adding non baby friendly things (salt/sugar/chillies etc) But salt lifts every dish. How can people cook without it at all?! I don't think i've ever come across a recipe that doesn't include seasoning.
I don’t really miss it.

On a roast dinner there is enough salt in the low salt gravy granules I use. I don’t need it in the veg.

I don’t really eat sauces but if I’m doing a pasta sauce for Dh I don’t add salt. There is a bit in cheese if I add that.

Dd makes a fantastic no salt curry for Dh when she’s home. If he has naan bread with it he’s not able to have salt in anything out or it would make him ill.

Clymene · 31/12/2021 21:09

I can't remember. Food cooked without salt can be horribly bland. I don't want to eat bland flavourless food thanks.

JaffavsCookie · 31/12/2021 21:09

I never did consciously add salt to their meals, and I am sorry but utter rubbish to suggest food will be bland without it, it’s just because your palates are so over used to salt. As adults they do sometimes add salt, 2 of them have turned into salt snobs and only use Welsh washed sea crystals. ( and yes I cook everything from scratch, don’t buy gravy granules or stock)

Comefromaway · 31/12/2021 21:10

I didn’t know you were supposed to add salt to steak before booking although Dh does specifically ask for no salt to be used if he orders a steak in a restaurant.

ISpyCobraKai · 31/12/2021 21:10

I can't really remember, I think probably from around a year I was much more relaxed about her eating food that had salt added in cooking.
I don't use loads, but I do season food, not just with salt obviously.
She's now 20 and a total foodie so it clearly did her no harm.

Not really- it’s about changing your taste buds from the habit
sjxoxo · 31/12/2021 21:11

Never..I cook from scratch but never feel the need to add any salt to meals? I thought it was a widely accepted fact it was bad for health a bit like sugar. I think a lot of ready meals sauces etc already have salt in aswell x

megletthesecond · 31/12/2021 21:11

Never. Don't use it when cooking from scratch either.
It's just for chips really.

Crowdfundingforcake · 31/12/2021 21:12

Never. Don't add salt to food except raw tomatoes, eggs cooked any way and chips.

I find food in Indian and Chinese restaurants way too salty, most processed foods way too salty.

grey12 · 31/12/2021 21:13

@Rainbowabacus1

Never. Confused

We don’t use salt in anything Blush

Anything??!!!! How can you eat unsalted pasta???!! 😱
WineIsMyCarb · 31/12/2021 21:14

None added to home made food. Don't worry about Bread/cheese/ham which are obv high salt.
They put mountains on Chips but that's only once a month or so, so fairly confident they won't dessicate Grin

Comefromaway · 31/12/2021 21:14

You salt pasta?

LizzieSiddal · 31/12/2021 21:14

I never used to add salt to anything when cooking but now in my 50s, taste buds change and I need salt.

I didn’t need it when younger and I don’t think children do either.

Clymene · 31/12/2021 21:14

No @OnlyFoolsnMothers - salt balances sweet, reduces bitterness, breaks down meat fibres, draws out liquid, makes decent bread.

Used judiciously, food doesn't taste salty.

In years to come, I think the demonisation of salt will belong in the bin along with the idea that eggs are bad for you.

I don't eat processed food though.

DisforDarkChocolate · 31/12/2021 21:15

When the youngest was about 16.

Lots of meals out taste salty to me.

100% agree with this. Salt is only an issue because people (generally) consume a lot of processed foods and things like pre-made bread. There's nothing inherently wrong with salt itself and sodium is an important mineral for the body (albeit most western diets have more than enough).
grey12 · 31/12/2021 21:17

@Comefromaway

You salt pasta?
You don't put any salt on the water you cook the pasta??!! Hmm traditionally it's supposed to be as salty as sea water!!!
mrsed1987 · 31/12/2021 21:17

Never, I don't add salt to anything for us either. I only have salt on chips 😂🤣
