He doesn’t actually drool that much, and is quite good with ‘solids’ (despite wanting to help with the spoon which usually ends in a mess if i let him) but for some reason when he’s tired he will intentionally spit on my shoulder then try to suck it back up. is this normal?

It’s probably for sensory enjoyment. At that age they don’t really do anything “on purpose”. It’s part and parcel of babies. Just keep the burp cloths on him and try to mop it up as frequently as possible.

I started weaning my ds with pure food at 5 months (he was sitting unsupported and trying to grab food off me so I thought I may as well), they can have finger food by 6 months, which may help him explore this sensory enjoyment in a different way. We did baby led weaning from 6 months as it’s not advised before this age. My ds really enjoyed it. It’s more about encouraging pleasure with food than actually eating and it helps set them up to try new foods later on. He loved playing with different textures, etc. He was also a very drooley and spit bubble blowing baby!

He's not doing it on purpose - he's 5 months old. He doesn't have that brain capacity.
