Any British expat mums living in Greece??

Hello,

I'm a British mum married to a Greek and living in northern Greece. Anyone else out there in the same position?

I used to know several British mums in Athens, but here in the north I haven't met anyone! I speak Greek, so I'm not completely alone, but sometimes I just feel the need for a good chat over a cup of tea in my own language. Anyone else know this feeling?

Loukia - what a lovely island to live on, I've been there a few times. You can guess from my nickname where I live, it's pretty obvious. Just got back from staying with the inlaws for Christmas (hence the delay in replying) and they have been feeding me bombaria, homemade baklavas and melomakarona. Tasty, but too much! xronia polla, kali xronia!

Hi there! Yes it is beautiful where we live but very quiet in the Winter. We live in a small tourist village so only one supermarket open now and 2 bars(which are full of greek men playing cards and backgammon)Hope you enjoyed your Christmas. I spent my first one with my inlaws(long story!)it went well everyone loved seeing our son. We have a little boy who is 1 next Sunday. How many children do you have? I am a Kourabiedes girl myself! i can not resist them, love all the icing sugar! Tha Kano dieta meta! Anyway have a great weekend. Its 20degrees here so its not very Christmassy We have Church tomorrow for communion, our son was Christened on the 2nd December(what fun that was!!!!) Lucie x

loukia - are you in the south?

alexpolismum · 29/12/2007 15:13

We have one son who is nearly 8 months and I am pregnant with no2. I'm not too fussed about kourabiedes myself, to me they just seem like large chunky pieces of shortbread. Maybe it's just the way my MIL makes them. She makes lovely melomakarona, though, and bombaria, too.

We're having the christening in Feb, so I've got that to look forward to. We only decided on the date recently, mainly so my parents would have time to book holiday time off work and get tickets to come, and my MIL has already invited loads of people, promising them a panigyri in a taverna, which we've apparently got to pay for. Oh well. I might have known!

I know what you mean about the kafeneia. They're really smoky, not a customer under the age of 50...

Gosh, you do have warm weather! It's 5 degrees here at the moment.

Have you ever been to the north? Or to other places in Greece?

Afternoon all! Yes Furball were in the South, not as far down as Gennadi though.Been there only once for a meal on the beach front. Congratulations on your pregnancy Alexpolismum! My Dp's father is from Kalamata, they have an Olive Farm so i have visited once, what a trek from Athens by coach.Lovely place though. Before we had Vasilis(our lo) we used to go Island hopping by boat from Athens so have so far been to Mykonos,Santorini,Hydra,Paros,Anti-Paros and Syros.I went to Zante before i met Dp.Used to spend a lot of time in Athens too. I must say i prefer the warm weather but wish there was more to do. Hopefully going to Uk to see my family soon so that will be a change. I have put a pic on my profile from our son's Christening! It was quite traumatic but i kept my mouth shut and let them get on with it!(just)It was over pretty quick.Have Great New Years Eves. I will be staying in so quiet one for us. Lucie x

Gosh, Loukia, I wouldn't want to go to Kalamata by coach from Athens, you must have been really dizzy by the end of it! I used to live in Athens. There was a lot more going on, but I prefer the peace and quiet of Alexandroupoli!

I've been to some of the same islands as you (all except Paros and Anti-Paros). I think of them all I liked Santorini best (but then we did honeymoon there !)

You should go to Mytilini some time too, I thought it was beautiful. And it's not as far for you as it is for me! Another lovely island, perhaps a bit less touristy but well worth a visit is Limnos, but I suppose you get enough of the peace and quiet out of season on Rhodes.

I've just had a look at your profile - your son looks very sweet! I must say I do like the hat!! Xronia polla to him, btw, I notice it's his name day today.

Happy New Year!
