If your ds had secreted himself under the table and eaten 3 days advent chocs in advance...

... what would you have done?

I'm really not sure whether I have gone over the top or under it IYSWIM.

I gave a big theatrical gasp, at which ds shouted 'I'M SORRY' and burst into equally theatrical tears, causing dh to run across the room and give him an enormous cuddle ( big soft daddy emoticon). I said calmly that since he'd taken a treat that he knew he shouldn't have, he could only have water this afternoon and nothing to eat until supper time (he is a very active child and normally has tea as in milk and biscuits mid-afternoon). Dh then got him to say sorry properly.

Was that pathetically wimpy, Draconian or about what you would have done?

Draconian, he will be difficult this afternoon, due to lack of his snack, I suspect (as well as the excess chocolate!).

Not having chocolate on the three days he's stolen from will be punishment enough. Or let him eat the chocolate from the calendar in future ONLY if he's been good ALL DAY

MerryBiglipsmas · 20/12/2007 16:00

oh dear!! !!

i would've of put it away...ive been there myself!!.....even now as i cant resist them

Don't deny him his milk. Honestly, you leave chocolate in reach and expect him to have the self control some adults can't muster? I'd make him skip the biscuit, purely for sugar rationing purposes, but give him some milk. It's cruel to punish a child with hunger.

Tutter · 20/12/2007 16:06

got to agree with coldtits

ds1 did the same at BILs house

i just shrugged, said i was sorry they were down a few chocs, but that if i were 2 i'd have done the same thing

youcheaplousyharpsichord · 20/12/2007 16:08

draconian sorry I think you have gone a bit over the top tbh. I would probably have just laughed about it.
I would give him his usual snack too

GrimmaTheNome · 20/12/2007 16:12

I think I'd have just said, well you wont be getting any chocolate for the next couple of days, will you?

choosyfloosy · 20/12/2007 16:19

Oh blimey [Victorian Mum emoticon]!

I had actually already downgraded it from 'water only' to 'any drink' [phew] i guess i wouldn't have admitted that if you'd all thought i was soft!

but yes i do kind of expect him to develop a bit of self-control (he's just about to turn 4). having said that we never had chocolate based advent calendars so the issue didn't arise when i were a nipper.

will put it away in future.

Oh come on, it's a sweet, funny thing to do! I'd laugh to be honest, then put the calendar on a high shelf. God, if it was mine, I'd probably eat the whole lot absentmindly while watching Spooks.
Natural consequences much better than punishments. Natural consequence is no chocs for next three days.

choosyfloosy · 20/12/2007 16:23

God I do love having MN to ask. I really haven't a clue. My mum was so gentle and nice to me and I go way over the top because - why? hmm. Probably because I want an advent calendar of my own...

My ds once ate the whole calander that his Nanna had given him on the way home from her house.
I would have just said you miss out on the next three days.

Blu · 20/12/2007 16:33

Get an advent calendar for yourself too, next year, CF. Except the choc is usually horrible.

OF COURSE he ate the chocs -most of Mn can't control themselves faced with semi-available chocolate!

And ease up on the treat-management!

ggirlsbells · 20/12/2007 16:38

A bit ott.

My ds ate all 24 chocs in one go last yr...I was secretly quite glad as I hate those bloody calendars .
