Two year old sleep regression?

My two year old is fine at night but some days he just refuses to nap recently. He'll sit in bed kicking his cot or rocking about etc and just can't seem to drop off. Other days he's fast asleep in 20 mins. He has a good routine, we stick to it consistently. Wakes up at about 6:30/7am nap about 12:30/1pm and bedtime 7/7:30pm. I feel so bad for him the days he doesn't nap...I end up getting him out of bed if he hasn't fallen asleep. Am I better to leave him in his cot so he can have some chill time and even fall asleep even if it takes him an hour or more or just give up on the nap? He deffo still needs it cause he's so hyper and cranky by bedtime without it. OH says I should leave him to chill and fall asleep even if it takes a while but I hate leaving him in bed if he's awake. TIA

I would leave him unless he's distressed. I put some nursery rhymes on for mu LO and she has a couple of cuddlies in there with her. Even if she doesn't fall asleep she is less cranky at bedtime because of the time to chill
