Badly behaved when over excited?

I’m really struggling with my 4 year old (5 next month) whenever he is excited about something. He just doesn’t seem to be able to control himself and is silly, ignores instructions and requests not to do something, is rude when talking to me and his dad and just hard work in general. Obviously at the moment it’s the excitement of Christmas, today was meant to be a lovely festive day and it’s just been very stressful because we have been constantly telling him not to do things, not to speak to us like that etc. I’ve ended up just coming upstairs and abandoned decorating the Christmas tree because I could feel myself getting ready to blow. He was similar around Halloween and when we went on holiday. He reminds me very much of my now 15 yo DD when she was younger. I can’t even remember how I dealt with that but I remember going to Disneyland Paris and having a really stressful time!!! No worries about his behaviour at school.

Any tips?! Am I expecting too much of him?! My 13 yo DS was never like this but very laid back.

Can you have a calm-down moment?

Both of you retreat to a room where there are no Christmas decorations, and do something very ordinary and quiet. Reading maybe. No return to the sitting room until 5 minutes of calm sense. Use something very visible like an egg timer or a stopwatch.

Make it clear that all Christmas related fun is over until calm is restored. No exceptions.
